Hiya, i am new to this site as i have only recently purchased my merc, i was driving it last night when the battery/altenator light come on and it was saying "visit workshop".
The altenator belt is loose when the engine is running but seems tight and normal when the engine is off...
Any idea for the solution to the problem????

Thanks Guys

It sounds like the alternator pulley is causing the belt to flap.

Is that the altenator belt tensioner by any chance guys?
If not were about is this located?

Thanks

I think BlackC55 is suggesting that the freewheeling pulley on the alternator is siezed, which then makes the belt look loose when the engine is running. If you take the belt off you can easily check if the one way clutch on the alternator is siezed or not, there is a special tool to remove it if its faulty.

Not necessarily this alternator is water cooled, even if the pulley was seized it would still charge

Alternator failure is common on that vintage, mine from 03 failed in 06, 2 weeks after the warranty ran out hmmm (don't actually know if it was fixed on later models ).

5 mins on a star tester will tell you whether this is the problem.

Thanks guys.

i have booked it into the garage so i will let them deal with it now..

Thanks

People should never forget that there is a Bosch service center in almost every town, these people can fit exchange parts at a much lower labour and parts cost than MB.

Often over looked this also goes for injection problems even back to the 90's as all of the gear is Bosch, and they all have superb test gear.
