Just a quick one,

My friend has got a w210 estate which he left a light on and now the battery is flat and like a moron he took the car in with only 1 key and it hasn't got the blade in the key.

Is there anyway to get into car without popping a window?

Any ideas please?

Must be some way of applying external power to the car to enable the remote locking system to work?

Under the bonnet there's a +ve terminal on most modern MBs, I assume the 210 will be no different. Or he could find a connection close to the alternator or something - obviously the -ve ground connection will be easy. Got to be worth a try first.

If you're definately going to have to 'break' in, then I guess a rear 1/4 glass would be the least expensive to replace. They're normally cheap from MB themselves if needed I would think.

Agreed, that's the easy way. Where is the starter motor on the car in question? If it's at the bottom of the engine bay it might be practical to jack the car up, remove the undertray and use a jump pack to provide some power to restore the central locking (red lead to the corresponding lead on the starter, black lead to a decent earth point.

That's unless MBs need their remotes re-synchronising after main battery supply loss.

Ian.

there will be a terminal that goes to the starter under the n/s bulkhead, probably easier to get at than the actual starter. as has been said there is also a terminal under the bonnet but i assume this is inacessible?

Thanks for the replies guys, he isn't too mechanically minded but I've told him what to do and he's going to try suppling power to the car using a jump pack from underneath in the hope of being able to open the car.

I've still got the spare key to one of my old W210s what are they chances that the blade in that will open the door? Are they similar at all? I very much doubt it but I used to have a Mondeo (I know, hang my head in shame) and the key would open my friends escort.

Is this one of the newer cars that displays the VIN number for all the world to see ? Assuming the VIN is known and your friend can prove his ownership and identity , then just pop down to the dealership and order a new key against the chassis no (usually takes 4 or 5 working days to arrive) - you can then open the car without doing any damage at all .

A breakdown service will get in with the traditional technique without breaking a window. That's what they did when my new-to-me R129 locked me out on its second day with me, because I left the engine running and closed the door while Automatic Locking When Driving was switched on.

I doubt that your key will fit another 210. Now, Ford, well . . .

He doesn't want to spend money on the car since it was only a part exchange and I'll probably be buying it off him. So I'll probably end up having to pay for a key.

He doesn't have AA as he usually smokes around in something newer and generally trouble free. I imagine he'll get bored and have to smash a window, is the battery under the front passenger seat on the estates? I've got a 210 coming in for scrap on Tuesday that I think is an Avantgarde also so I can just steal the window out of that for this one!

That shouldn't happen. Once the key is inserted into the ignition the autolock is disabled until traveling over 10km/h.

You could always hack through the plastic grille insert to get at the bonnet release , then get another grille insert from a scrappy for a tenner or so ?

Thanks. That's what I thought, but I have found no better explanation so far. I'll see if my mechanic's Star system can detect anything.

I've switched it off anyway, as I don't like it.
