2012 E350 Cabriolet
Hi all, I am new to this forum. I have owned a low mileage 2012 E350 cabriolet for a year bought from an MB dealer.
I took my car for its yearly MOT and service to the dealer that I bought it from and all was good. However, during the service I was advised that the car needed a diesel ECU software update which was done. Since the update/service was performed my fuel economy has dropped by around 20%. I do the same journeys, drive in the same style and mode.
My dealer who performed the service said nothing can be done.
I am getting max 29mpg from my diesel and prior to the service I achieved a regular 35mpg.
Has anybody else had similar issues?

This was noticed in the VW world when they started having the ECU updates after the Dieselgate scandal started.
A lot of people had their updates rolled back by 3rd party tuners.

Thanks Muckypaps but MB dealer have told me that the update can't be rolled back. Its what I suspected, the emissions issue.

It can be remapped though.
The ECU update the dealer did has caused a lot of people's mpg to suffer.
Find a reputable company and you'll gain performance and economy.

Thanks CowleyStJames but why should I pay for an MB F**k up?

Your car is now performing as it should have done if MB did not piss around with the diesel emissions etc. The (forced) SW update has made them comply with the figures the car should have given out regarding emissions. If we were in the USA, you may have been able to claim something. Sadly, here we have no chance.

As suggested, a remap or roll back from a reputable tuner is your only option if you want the MPG back.

So, to meet the laboratory EU emissions test requirements you have to have higher real world fuel consumption and emissions. Surely the "illegal" software was the better version.
As Richard Dimbelby once said in exasperation on TV "Jesus Wept".

It's the same principle as cat removal on petrol cars or DPF removal on Diesel cars - you get better performance but higher emissions.

I wonder what one's insurer would think regarding the remap to reverse the manufacturer's update?

Higher egr operation to reduce NOx always has consequences .

Hi,

I've called multiple tuning companies as well as a Bosch diagnostics company and a remap/roll back is not possible. I've also asked MB several times, too.

They can only remap from where the car is 'now', unfortunately; they download your current ECU software, tweak, and put it back. They don't have a full 'clean' map to put on, like they often do with VWs.

I'm in the same boat.

My e350 2011 is suffering poor economy after update, regular runs to Dublin return 39mpg. I used to achieve 46mpg, around town is horrible too. Love my Merc but I’m considering selling due to this update!

Please report to MB!!

Also please check to see when your car is changing up into 7th gear. It now seems to do its t 74mph (over the speed limit) - so if you don't break the law, it will stay in 6th, running higher revs unless you manually change up.

It used to change into 7th earlier.

Can you confirm if this happens to you?

Yes, I can confirm the box does not change into 7th gear as readily as it did previously on my E220.

This happened after the software update carried out during a service.
