Hi i have a 190 2.0 auto with gearbox problems, i have 1st 2nd reverse and that is it, this all started on my way back from getting an A150 for my wife, i used the kickdown droped to second and now will not go to 3rd or 4th, no loss of power, ive checked the fluid & its fine.

There was no bangs or anything just wont shift passed 2nd, starts & drives fine.

This is my 1st benz & dont want to have to get rid but im running out of ideas:(:(

cheers

There is a transmission upshift delay relay K29 which powers an upshift delay solenoid Y3/2 on the transmission itself. I am not sure where its powered from--possibly the fuel pump relay. If this circuit or components have gone faulty it would possibly prevent the box from changing up? The fact that this happened just after you used the kickdown switch might indicate a problem in this area?:dk:

Another cruder fault would be a kickdown switch that's faulty. you could try disconnecting it temporarily to see if your gear change is restored?

Thanks there is a buzzing noise coming from the fuel pump area i was wondering if there may be a problem there, i heard it the other day when i was under the car trying to check the vacume pipes

disconected the switch and there has been no change, when in S mode it will drop to 1st when i use kick down but then wont go back to 2nd unless i put it in Neutral then into Drive but still no 3rd or 4th

Looks like a visit to a autotransmission specialist or Mercedes specialist who is familiar with this particular transmission and its controls is on the cards. May be something quite easy to repair or the gearbox has suffered a major internal failure. Guess you will have to bite the bullet and find out for sure? Autotransmission information is poorly documented in the early Mercedes workshop literature.:(

p.s. you might have more luck on this forum http://www.mercedes190.co.uk/

Has the OP tried pulling out the K29 relay as shrewdly suggested by Graeme? The relay is supplied by the OVP, but, earth switched by the CIS-E controller. However, if the relay's points were stuck closed, this would prevent a 2 - 3 shift.

Certainly an easy test to try.:thumb:

The K29 RELAY is described as mounted next to the coolant reservoir but thats for a LHD drive car-it might be on the battery side in a RHD car. :dk:Its covered by a black rectangular box here's a rather poor picture of what you are looking for. This applies to later cars the earlier cars use part of the fuel pump relay. However this earlier FPR layout should have been disabled by disconnecting the kickdown switch so most likely to be the K29 RELAY if you can find it.
