*** Apologies to Mods, if this is in the wrong section ***

All,

My brother in law and I have found a used MB being sold privately, however it has a mixed/partial history.

Does anybody here have a hook up or link into MB whereby we could check up/verify some of the details given?

If anybody can help please let me know and I can PM details or talk over the phone.

Basically it is a 2002 W211 E220 CDi Avantgarde, with lowish mileage. however, it has had a few owners, and some bodywork done to it. No issues on the accident side of things, as the majority of the cars on the road have have accident work at some stage. The car is in good condition and drives well, is HPI clear etc all the way.

We need to check and see if we can come up anything adverse by EOB today otherwise will hopefully be getting the car tomorrow.

Thanks in advance.

regards
W.

Any stickers in the windows or on the number plates showing who the supplying dealer was? Might be able to get some details through them.

To check the MB service history call Mercedes customer services, give them the reg and they can tell you when it was serviced within the network.

I've looked at the service stamps, noted the info down and called the dealer before. If you're lucky you speak to someone who understands that you only need information about the car's history, without reference to the previous owner's contact details etc. In the past the commonest problem I've come across is the interpretation of the data protection act.

Vikings in Kent were really helpful when I called and put far more effort into telling me what they had done, when and even identified the MB bodywork warranty jobs that had been done. They had done all of the MB stamped work on the car in question though, I'm not sure what happens between dealers, i.e. whether they share information. Vikings agreed (in principle) that they could let me have photocopies of previous invoices with the previous owners' details removed if I needed them. I didn't buy the car, so haven't followed it up.

If you can get the info off the service book, try the dealers by quoting VIN, date and mileage for the things you want to verify and they should be happy to oblige if they aren't too busy at the time.

I've had luck with this approach in the past too. One time I was looking at an Alfa 156 for my brother-in-law. Just rang the servicing dealer and asked to speak to the Service dept. Explained I was looking to purchase a car that had been through their workshop and wanted to validate the history and see if any recall work had been completed. They even faxed me stacks of stuff confirming the services / recall work, how much it would cost for a second key and a couple of minor bits of trim etc.

Good luck & keep us all posted...

Thanks for everyone's response regarding this. The Russian VIN link is great, bookmarked! I used the MOT history tracker from DVLA to follow the progress as the car was being MOTd yesterday, and was updated instantaneously. Also I did make the calls to MB Customer Care twice, and got the same response each time, 'sorry data protection act'

However, following the MOT update at 1pm yesterday, I decided to call the test station to find out about the car, and was greeted by a someone for whom English is a second/third language. Once I verified he was the MOT tester, I asked him about the 'silver mercedes' (W211) he had tested that morning - he could NOT recollect it until I told him the registration number (Alarm Bells) - 4 hours into the day and doesn't recall a large silver W211.

When I gave him the reg number - 'oh that yes, N/S rear tyre is close to legal limit... everything else is fine.' 'Who are you?' - my tail was up...

Went round to see/collect the car, and guess what, exact same mileage as when we left it the night before, in exactly the same place it was parked. With an extra years MOT!!!

Just to verify, I asked about advisories issued 'No nothing, straight through no problem' - so decided to tell the seller that I had spoken to the MOT garage, and that the vehicle had not moved overnight as I noted the mileage before we left the night before.

Oh and it was the first W211 which drove at 2+mph with the hand(foot)brake on and the car in Drive without touching the accelerator.

We walked away....

The MOT test station is GENUINE MOTORS,
Odometer reading: 66,274 Miles
Test number: 641636009302
Test station name: GENIUNE MOTORS
Test station number: 8760BJ

If anyone needs a dodgy MOT, I am sure they may oblige!!!

thats a very serious offence and if i were you i would report them to VOSA.

That sort of practice could kill someone.

I am in the process of doing that.... Can't let them get away with that.
