beautiful '87 260E
<div class="bbWrapper">Hiya, ive recently bought an 87 260e and im totally stoked by it, however, the person i purchased it off said that it had a replacement engine put in 12 months ago, ok no big deal but he doesnt have the paperwork as the owner before him (an old widow) had the new lump installed and she had misplaced it. i wasnt too phased by this but yesterday i was looking round the engine bay for the ignition timing trimming socket, i located it no problem but the one on the car is stated in my haynes manual as being for 300 models so im a bit confused as to whether the replacement lump is a 3ltr or a 2.6 with a different trimming socket this might sound a bit bone to some of you but im not exactly blessed with a massive technical knowledge. please help!! <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f615.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt="" title="Confused " data-smilie="5"data-shortname="" /></div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Hmm, can you see the engine number on the block? If you can get this, then someone could probably tell you which one it is...<br /> <br /> The 300 is an inline 6 cylinder, isnt the 250 a 5 cylinder?? <br /> <br /> Ian B Walker has one, so im sure he can clarify...</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">I think the 260e is the smallest 6 cylinder that Mercedes made in a 124 shape. I think the <u>250</u> was a diesel but not sure it had 5 cylinders. I'll stop thinking now........ <img src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f644.png" class="smilie smilie--emoji" loading="lazy" width="64" height="64" alt="" title="Roll Eyes " data-smilie="11"data-shortname="" /></div>

<div class="bbWrapper">My first Merc was a 260E, great car and deffinately a 6 cylinder 2.6 litre. I'm not 100% but I think the block was the same for a 260 and 300, with different stroke to change the cc. <br /> <br /> All the best</div>

I'm guessing the previous owner would have swapped for an identical block though, in which case I'd bet you have a 2.6 litre inline 6 cylinder engine.<br /> <br /> S.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">thanks for all of your input ill check out the engine number and let you know, you'll all probably get a bit peeved with me asking dumb assed questions but as i said before im a bit of a doughnut with all things benz (at the mo anyway!)</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">You could race another 260 and see if you can kane his ass <img src="/styles/mbclub/smilies/devil.gif" class="smilie" loading="lazy" alt="" title="Devil " data-shortname="" /></div>

Straight six. The difference being the 300 was bored out. The 250 is a 5 cyl diesel</div>
