I have the DAS STAR tool and I keep getting a communication error;
The RS232 interface of the PC is occupied by another program (e.g. HHT_WIN)

Can anyone help

HHT_WIN i think is to do with Hilgrave HyperTerminal. Make sure that isn't running in the background before you run your application as it will block the serial port to other applications and give the symptons you describe. :)

Just wanted to thank you for your input seymansey. I have a computer tech. at our shop but he still can't figure it out. Hopefully he will be able to get this running for us.

Is your system one of these Asian jobs? There seems to be allot of similar errors on the Chinese "copies". It's actually putting me off retiring my Carsoft diagnostics and buying one of these...

Yes we brought the unit from china, we are a small shop and thought this would be a good alternitive to having to take cars to the dealer to get them coded when needed. I am expecting another T23 laptop today, but I do not have any faith that the program will run in that one either. If there is a sliver lining we are learing alot about computers. Thanks for everyone's imput.

They are available direct from MB's with full support & back-up why would anyone bother with e-bay junk?!

Kate

lil.smartie, Yes they are available through Mercedes Benz, however, as a small shop we did not have the tens of thousands of dollars to invest in one. I have bought many things over ebay with complete satisfaction, this is the first time we have had any problems. I was asking for help through this forum, not to be critized by a wannabe elitist.

Actually I thought you were asking for help with your pirated cheap Chinese pirated copy of Star!

Throwing insults around doesnt get you a lot of the help you require in here ;)

Fine, I am sorry for my response; However as Socrates said "It is easy to be a critic"
Instead of taking the easy out and criticizing our only option, try taking the time to help solve the problem. I greatly appreciate those who took their time to offer solutions. I give a hearty thank you to all who chose to offer advise.

We are also a small specialist dealer, we only deal with Smarts yet we have invested the money in the correct hardware & software for the job. Have you actually had a price from MB's as you may be surprised at the cost and for the extra back-up (replacement should anything go wrong, advice on the end of the phone etc) and extra functions that a genuine set up brings we found it was well worth the extra cost over a WIN-STAR that we used before or an E-Bay copy.

As a new shop, only opened for a little over a year, it is extremly tough to come up with the thousands necessary to get the 'proper' tool. Even used, the DAS costs over 10K, It was a chance we had to take. It took nearly 100K to open the doors and to find a decent facility. We used to take the vehicle to the local dealer, their charge for coding was only a $100. But within the past couple of years the corporations that own nearly every dealer in America continue to rape the independent repair facility. Last time we took a 210 to get an EIS coded was over $1,000, there is no profit anymore in doing so.

I can understand your frustration however you are using a unauthorised/unsupported equipment/software but I wont judge you for that. Right, I have spoken to few friends. Now, They are unsure to exactly what OS you are using. But I assume it's a Windows XP system. Did you buy the multiplexer with the HDD pre installed with OS and DAS? If you did, Most of these HDD are set up only to use an IBM T23-T30 machine. If you try and put one of these HDD into a non IBM machine they either don't work or run badly. This may be your problem. If you have the DAS disk and installed it onto a machine it still may give you problems... I found with the Software I use I had tried to get it to work for 2 weeks with no success. Until I installed XP from fresh, Just XP with service packs that's all! I got it installed and working and just built the system with other software. Try this! Boot the system into safe mode (usually F8 before the Windows XP page) and check the com port is set up correctly. If any changes needed to be made do it now. If the port is set correctly, Uninstall the port and then reboot and let windows reinstall it. If you still get the same error. It's either the combination of Software/system or a faulty Multiplexer! Try the Ibm you mentioned earlier... Try a fresh install!

Thank you so much Piper Alpha, we do have a T23, I printed your response and gave it to our computer tech that we had to hire because of this. Hopefully, we will get somewhere, if not I guess I will try to return the system we bought and start over again. At least we have narrowed it done to a communication problem with the ports, it probley is with the software with our luck. But again thanks so much for your imput.

We acutally figured out what was wrong with the DAS STAR, we had to get the bits per second has to be 19200 not the typical 9800, you have to go to device manager and find the port you want and go to propeties and manually change the bits per second to 19200. My wife found the answer on some chinese web site which was in chinese but we could somewhat understand and follow. Thanks for everyone's help, and hope no one has to go through what we did for 2 weeks

I'm glad you have the problem nailed! I figured it was something to do with the Port but what I wasn't sure exactly what! So what is the full list of setting on the port. You could do a search on STAR on the forum and anyone with the same problem just post them link to this thread.

Regards
John

Good news mate , stick around , they are a helpful bunch here ! ;)

How do I post a link on this forum?
The list for the ports looks like this
Bits per second 19200
Dat Bits 8
Parity None
Stop Bits 1
Flow Control XonXoff

Again thank you, it is however, it is a shame that in America you are forced to go to another country to buy this product unless you have tens of thousands to spare. Also here if we did buy it from Mercedes Benz of North America there really is no support, I guess they do that so the small business man has a hard time surviving, over here we really don't care about small business owners. Thanks for letting me rant.

Jesse , try a PM to Alfie or Richard , they are our resident STAR experts on the forum.
