Panic! I am off to to France tomorrow morning in my S320 (first reg Nov 2000).

How do I adjust the headlamps to dip to the right or do I need to get a beam deflector?

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Gerry, and welcome to the Forum.

If you use the search there are a number of similar queries to yours ... basically it depends on the model and whether it has Xenons etc.:

I had a similar panic the day before a drive to Southern Germany and back a couple of weeks ago, albeit with my VW Sharan. The headlights are crystal clear, so you need to buy headlamp protectors (which have the appropriate markings on) before you can fit beam deflector stickers. The dealership had everything in stock, but their advice was that since I was only going for a week not to bother! They suggested simply using the headlamp adjustment control to angle the beams down a little, which is what I did.

Make sure your insurance and breakdown cover apply in Europe, too. Mine (Direct Line and RAC) didn't ... but temporary cover arranged over the phone, and certificates sent by email for me to print off.

Good luck :)

Thank you for the info, Bill.

I have read the thread and found a few others which are relevant but sadly, it seems, none quite fit my xenon fitted S320. If there is a small lever on my set-up then I can't find it unless it is a major engineering task to get at it.

It seems a bit odd that it should need a dealer to make the switch, unless there is a dealer stationed at Dover/Calais and on 24 hour call, as otherwise one is bound to fall foul of the law on one side of the channel or the other. Odd also that such a basic need gets no mention in the car's manual.

I do not plan to drive after dark on my trip so I guess I shall just have to hope I am not pulled over for a random check.

Once again Bill, thanks for your input. This sure is an amazingly interesting site to browse.

Chhers, Gerry
