E class
Hi all,

Driving around today and a couple of times when I gone to move forward car has stopped and message 'Presafe function limited see owners manual' I'm currently away so don't have the manual with me. Anyone any idea what this is?

Thanks

Doing a quick search online it seems that other owners have had this issue after either driving in heavy rain, driving through a puddle or washing their cars.
Here is a reply to a similar question on another forum.

PRE-SAFE LIMITED means that the sensors & other things the car uses to see what's ahead and around you are dirty or unreliable, so the car is cutting out those safety functions because it cannot trust them. I get this warning when driving in horrible blizzards & snowstorms - it's the car telling me NOT to trust the collision radar safety feature thing, because it's blind from slush and who knows what else covering up its bits.

Not saying you don't have a defective part, but if you were just driving in heavy rain/snow and you got this message, that could be why.

I would check all of your sensors to see if you have anything obstructing them. Dirty windscreen, bugs on your radar (if you have one).

Did you search online for 'Pre-Safe function limited', there is plenty of info.
Do you have a 'check engine light' on?

Thanks for your reply. Found information about dirty sensors car is clean but gone round them all again.

Not got any lights or warnings I'll see how it goes tomorrow. Strangest thing was the way it just stopped as you moved forward from being stationary like at a junction or the lights

I’m not sure which E class model year you have or what safety functions it has but from the info I have seen they are talking about the Distronic radar behind the grille star and the windscreen radar in front of the rear view mirror.

In the cases I read about their cars didn’t actually stop, it just gave a warning that the safety functions may not be working correctly. When your car stops is there any warning beeps or visual indication that it could be your parking sensors being triggered.

I guess if you don’t have a CEL then that’s a bonus. The best option would be to get your car plugged into STAR for a diagnostic check.

Good luck and I hope it’s nothing serious.

Bit of an update didn't do it for a day or two doing it again today.
One thing I noticed though is it seems to be linked to the Eco start/stop.
When it cuts out and goes to restart there's a bit of a clunk underneath then message flashes up about Presafe. Car will drive but Eco no longer works and the Eco button won't activate.
Looks like I'll have to take it to an Indy and get it checked.

Did you find out what was causing this and the fix?
