Hi guys and girls,
When doing some work on the E350 CDI today, I took the plastic engine cover off to start the work and was greated with a surprise of what looked like dirt or soil all over the top of the batwing/air filters.
It wasn't until I was giving the engine cover a bit of a spruce up did I realise this 'dirt' was actually some brown heatproof(?) foam rapidly disintegrating from the underside of the engine cover. A very gentle rub with a finger and it's just falling apart.
It's the two coffee-brown rectangle bits in the image below.
Does anyone know if I can try to peel off this brown foam and replace? It's stuck well to the dirty grey fabric/carpet type material that can be seen more prominently along the top of the cover as shown in the picture.
If it comes as new insulation bonded to the carpet thing, the carpet thing is attached to the underside of the engine cover by spot melts/plastic welds.
Alternatively, can anyone suggest a DIY fix? If I scrape off the brown foam as best I can, what can I use instead please and how might I stick it down?
I had a look through the forum, but couldn't find anything similar.
Am I alone with this issue?
