Hi guys,

first registered on this site a few years ago when I had a w202 c200 but now after having a few other cars, namely 2 bmws and a lexus gs300 im back, looking for something more economical and diesel as im now doing 20k+ per year with a budget of £11,000.

Very tempted by a few 54 and 05 plate 90k+ facelift c classes, namely the c200 or c220 cdi manual. Would really appreciate some advice on problems to look for on these. Firstly, what is the manual box like? do these cars tend to run into expensive problems with turbos etc? and most importantly what are people on here getting in terms of real world mpg from both of these engines, as I would really need to realise 40+ mpg to justify going derv. Finally do these engines have a timing belt or chain?

Cheers
John

If you intend to keep the new car forever or not worried about resale values then buying a manual MB in the wrong colour is always go to bag you a good deal. However, if you want to see some of your £11k back I'd consider an auto.

I'm sure someone will come along soon to advise on the strength and longevity on a modern MB manual box but as for what it feels like to use the best thing is to try it out for yourself. Everyones opinion differs and your cup of tea might be someone elses idea of hell.

I do not believe that they are that good, we still get first gear and lay shaft faults and stiff to change gear problems
