Hinges... Do they Need Lubrication?

Hi All,

Quick question - on other cars I have owned, they come back from service with the hinges covered in some white goo (ooer) that I presume is a dry lubricant of some kind.

Now, I have recently come into possession of my car and it doesn't appear to have this residue. (possibly valeted off)

Are hinges sealed or do they benefit from a lube job?

We had this chat in the office yesterday, about how main dealers always do this, as if it's that critical.

Would be interesting to know what the white fluid is. I suspect it is white so you notice the difference after a service.

:-)

I think... its a dry silicon lubricant, which I do have...

But, is it necessary for MB hinges?

Are they sealed for life?

I raised this query when I bought my car....the service department assured me that they do lubricate the hinges with a special clear lube.....anyway, the doors appeared to operate more smoothly after the service they undertook so I have to believe this!

Okay, carefully applied dry silicon lubricant it is then :-)

That's correct - put some obvious stuff on the hinges, but leave the changing of the important fuel filter hidden away under the rear cover alone, as the customer will never know.

However that is much more detrimental to the car.

The white stuff looks like lithium spray grease and has the same texture.

Where can you get this clear stuff? my front passenger door has started making a terrible noise.

I thought the white stuff was a PTFE lube spray ... one dealership I went to in the past (not M-B) used to leave the can in the car so you could use the rest on whatever you fancied during the next year!

Dry lube (silicon) is great stuff though.

I personally hate that white spray crap that goes everywhere. I use a sticky spray grease from Wurth carefully applied on the hinges and not all over the doors!

Alos use some on the door handles and locks.

Gots to say the dealers make on heck of a mess with the white stuff...

(on the hinges I mean) :o
