How do I get the old stereo cage out?

Hi guys, sorry if these seems dense, I have done a search but no luck.

I'm a Saab guy but I'm helping my mum out fitting her new stereo to a 2000 SLK230. Basically, I've got the old headunit out, wiring the new one in is plug and play, I'm just stuck with the old cage.

The metal one has come out, but then there's also a black plastic cage in there, it's solid with no holes. The new cage and headunit fit in WITH THIS ONE STILL IN THERE, so I assume if I take it out the gap will be too big for the new stereo? What do you guys do to secure the new cage in there when you put new stereos in?

Because currently it's stopping me bending the tabs on the new cage down to secure it in place, so currently the stereo pulls in and out every time you accelerate! I take it all of them have this-the stereo in there was original. If you don't get what I mean I can take a photo though.

Cheers.

Either acquire an Autoleads fitting pack or (absent better advice from those who know more than I - I know stereos, not SLKs!) create a few places where the sleeve can grab onto with a dremel or similar?

How about putting a small counter sunk self tapper screw at each side of the metal casing, to fix it to the plastic liner. You would just need to drill a small pilot hole, and chose a suitable space in the metal liner, so no metal drilling required.

I had to do something similar once and tried using a dab of glue from a hot glue gun, but it broke free after a week or so, therefore a self tap screw may be better.

The black one is not a cage, it is part of the car and is supposed to be there as the original radios fit without a cage.

Ok guys, responses are much appreciated. So there's no obvious way then! I'll have to make a home made solution then...cheers.

How was the old metal cage secured if there is no space to bend any tabs?

you can secure the new metal cage with small flat headed self tapping screws.
As Jaymanek said, the black plastic is part of the car!

Wrap insulating tape round the Stereo body at the front and rear to a couple of wraps bigger than the plastic box opening so it's a tight fit and push it in. Done it in the past and it's worked.
