How do you View your AMG??

i have been on and off selling my E55 for best part of last 4-5 years now dependant on my mood with it, LOL, have then thrown a little more money at it here and there, on mods and maintenance, then go out on a few events and jolly's with the regular guys eventing here, during those times, sometimes the car is just awesome, some days, it's a dinosaur, way past its prime, very much so during the recent Spa track day trip, a big car for such an event, very fast in a straight line, but very much not designed for the corners! but a great long weekend with some great guys and some fantastic cars that I will and can only dream of owning. This said, I get in my car very rarely these days, work and time, against me going out for a run in the car, but when I do, the car, when it's not broken, is awesome, I enjoy it every time, and without it, I would not have met many of the guys I now come to know and enjoy their company, on frequent numerous events and jolly's out, money well spent on my part, wife would say no! on many occassion's, and prehap's not in many peoples eyes here also, but for myself, in this world as one gets old, good times, and great times have been had, and has been well worth the money outlayed, and have done and experienced many things I may well have never have done previously, and not met the guys I have a kindred spirit with regards these AMG cars.:D:bannana:

Sell it and it will be the biggest regret in your motoring life... one member still can't come to terms with departure of his E55. John boy, the CL500 owner.

It's a strange situation really for me and I've had time to pick over the bones...

I sold my E55 for a few minor reasons but the main one was I couldn't trust myself not to drive it excessively fast on the public road and my possible stay in a police-sponsored hotel not of my choosing. I did not have the discipline to stop myself although I never have regretted selling it (although I think reached a natural conclusion at the same time).

If I sold it before this time, I would have regretted it for sure - at least I believe so anyway.

So this precludes me from buying anything seriously fast again and I've resigned myself to the fact so whatever I buy in future, will never reach the levels of excitement that car gave me.

Recent inclinations to buy a Maserati Granturismo have not come to fruition because I cannot sit in one for more than 20 minutes without getting a sore lower back and knees - no matter what seat position. They don't make them for old 6'4" blokes weighing 120kg basically. I also couldn't face sinking 50 big ones into a car either - not value for money let alone running costs. This is the same level of performance as my CL500 but actually, it was to try and replace the "special factor" which is now missing although I don't think this would have achieved that anyway.

I've driven a 14 plate E63 not so long ago and I certainly didn't get the sense of occasion and all round ability I got with the E55. Whether that's me or the product, I don't know. If I tried a 700BHP E63, I wouldn't really be in a different situation than I was to start with...

I've thought about it a lot since I sold the E55 and I have now accepted my situation. As a result, in the last 2 months, I've really started to enjoy the CL500 for what it is and stopped thinking about the requisition of very fast cars!

I'm also getting used to having a really stress-free drive to and from work. I saw a 997 GT3 the other day and I would have definitely had a play with that but I don't get the urge anymore.

So maybe it's taken me a very long time to adjust after 5.5 years.

And I still think the CL is one of the best-looking cars MB have ever made. I got it washed earlier and sat there looking at it - especially when they moved it to dry it off.

There's a lot of folk much worse-off than me so I'm going to stick with the CL until a coupe no longer suits I guess... :D

Gav, in your situation, only your head and heart can decide your way forward. You know what you really want - it's just a question of being honest with yourself. I get the feeling underneath, the E55K is not really the car for you and it's hard for those who love them, like me, not to enthuse about them. :thumb:

I think in my case the dream/chase was greater than the catch. Do t get me wrong i had a whale of a time earlier today and the car parked up at the unit looked Awesome! I just seem to have a roller-coaster ride with it,

Im going to do a few meets this year and see how i feel after.

Thats funny as it catches the same feelings I had about a Porsche man years ago.

AMG - adding a combination of power, naughty and handling to a solid platform. Not intended to be scary, exciting or flamboyant. Bit of an evil sleeper but with traditional solid reliability.

I contrast it to a previous generation Alfa, flamboyant and loved by all but more likely to pee on your shoes.

A long time ago I bought a Porsche 968 Club Sport. Everyone said it was amazing. I was underwhelmed at first. Then I learnt that it was rock hard, predictable and you could drive it on the edge every day.

I figure an AMG is close to the 968 but a sleeper so unless you paint it pink no-one should see it for the power monster it is. I have always de-badged mine and avoided making it look anything other than a regular MB. Even a 220d can have an AMG body kit and nice alloys.

I enjoy it as a street sleeper with a wicked turn of speed and solid reliable platform. I then have a fun car for the freaky moments. Its German not Italian !

I use my E63 as a daily driver (I cover circa 14,000 miles a year in it) and the best thing is that every morning and evening my daily commute is an event.

I get to use the full performance of the car for less than a minute a day in aggregate, but that (less than) 60 seconds makes me laugh, feel good, and rejoice. Every day :thumb:

I like my E55, but I can't say I love it like used to my old tuned maserati biturbo...fantastic fun car! I too have been looking at different cars, two I blame on SPX ,as he changes his cars like underpants. The XFR he used to have sounds really nice & a RS6 Avant appeal. I have dismissed the XFR as it sounds a lot like a E55 so whats the point spending an extra 8 - 10k when its not to much different. I have slid away from the RS6 (well nearly) as it seems to fast & to capable, if that makes sense? What does not make sense but will not leave my head is a CL600 Biturbo 215. I love the sleekness of them & the super smoothness with effortless power, to me they exude class. What sober's me up like being hit with a wet flannel are the issues of ABC, coil packs & (new to me) they apparently suffer from the front plastic wings slitting ?

My Wife gets in my car & says she love's riding in it as it feels so solid & smooth, which makes me feel guilty in looking at other cars...they are nice cars...just something you can't put my finger on, if I am honest I Liked my C32 more...odd I know ?:dk:

What is it exactly that you don't like about it? The engine, the shape, the handling? Or do you just want a newer car? I couldn't help but notice you praise other peoples biturbos...

The original question 'How do you view your AMG ?' can, by most AMG owners,be answered by "Through rose tinted spectacles"

Ignoring the cost of ownership/running - more so if bought new - while enjoying all of the good bits.

My C55 AMG is my only car and gets driven everyday, I have covered 8500 miles in 4 months of ownership so far and enjoyed every mile of that while at the same time ignoring the money I have spent on fuel and maintenance.

My earlier posts will show that I had a V8 AMG itch I needed to scratch and the budget (none existent) would never stretch to a C63 so I bought a C55 wagon as research had shown me that it was pretty low tech but still the 'real deal' and as a result cheap to run (for a V8 AMG). So far I have been proven correct and am very happy with it.

I have bought a pair of rose tinted specs...just in case.

I've never said i don't like, It's just i dont get that "Wow this is the dogs" feeling all the time, In fact most other people are the ones who that say it, It always gets nice comments and attracts attention.

My son said just recently "Wow dad i bet you love this car and keep it for ever And that i've never felt in my ownership.

It is i think for me a Expensive toy "for me", I had a right good laugh yesterday with it as i was being naughty, and it was a cracking hoot.

The car always feels quite Raw to drive, Perhaps it's the Map and other bits, But thats what a AMG is isn't it? Lets see how the summer go's.

With regards to Bi-Turbo's Yes they really are a awesome machine in my eyes, But it will be a very long time before i have the ability to buy one.

Think I'm starting to get your point... you'd probably be very happy with a E500. It's not a DERV, it's got a V8 and it's a sensible choice with no boy racer/hooligan image attached to it.

I think most people get AMG cars for performance. Most of those see the benefit of power and want to take it further... power is addictive and it makes sense.

If you're not into 'power' it makes more sense to get the next one down on the engine list... it's not right or wrong and I personally think you'll regret it but some people went back/down and are happy and content with just normal power.

I use mine for long journeys and for transporting 4 people rapidly in comfort and with a bit of fun along the way. I've got another car I would rather take out on a Sunday morning b road blast/track day and one for commuting.

I also use my 55 wagon for taking crap to the dump and scaring people in 911s! I have really enjoyed bringing it back from rusty retirement and modding it mildly.

I love mine, as for a convertible AMG it's really subtle, especially as it's de-badged. Never tire surprising people who don't know what it is. After 3 years though it'll be going soon to fund a house purchase. It was going to be a forever car and i've spent money on it with that intention, but needs must! It is being replaced with a 65bhp 2001 138k mile Clio Diesel, which i actually also really like!

At first it was my daily driver replacing a c230 so that was a massive change for me. But even though I had driven (but not owned by me) Lotus Carltons and M5's with my foot down, the W211 was more of a beast than both of these. Getting in it for a blast for probably the entire first year felt like I was just pointing it in the right direction and hanging on for my life. But five years down the road now I mainly just potter around and it does that job as well as any bog standard E220d. I don't ever want to sell it.

Today it is an occasional chariot of choice but it still excites me to get in and drive it. I have been through some painful expenses with her and during those times I am on the cusp of moving on .... but what would I replace it with.? And as soon as I get back in and drive her away from the garage the initial feeling of that first drive comes flooding back to my mind. Sure a Clk63 black comes to mind but that ain't ever going to happen.

She was a dream car for me so I am ticking that box every time I drive her.

I just think I'll keep hold of her.

Do you love your AMG?
This is normal human psychology/behaviour.

This is like marriage. You find the woman who is right for you (or man, for the female readers on here). Bear with me here...

You get married, you go through the honeymoon phase and you say to yourself, you could not possibly want anyone else and you couldn't see how you could get bored of her. But after a year or a few, you do. You settle down to a stable relationship, you lose that spark for each other, but you could not live without each other or you would miss each other if you were separated.

Your AMG is the same if it's your daily drive. If you have a cheaper run about car for the daily chores but the AMG is the odd weekend trip then it stays fresh and exciting for longer.

So the weekend car is the mistress (or playboy for the female readers here). She always stays exciting because you only do exciting things together and you don't spend all the time and do daily chores together. However, she is damn expensive. You've got to get a separate apartment, she wants designer label handbags and stilletos. She wants to be taken out to expensive restaurants... Wow she is expensive to run.. but you say to yourself, yeah, she's worth it when you look at her body and her beauty.

Running an AMG as the daily is having the expensive mistress as the wife. Eventually it will stop exciting you.

Discliamer: this is just an analogy and was not taken from a real life situation. Pure fantasy:D

Nail and Head "leef44"

This is what Brutus is like although my Honeymoon period was spoilt somewhat, Sooo Best i go on a 2nd one with it?? lol

This is where you seek marriage counselling. They will advice you to get a second car as the daily which is cheaper and still reliable. The daily grime of winter weather, salted gritted roads, school runs and shopping trips in multi-storey car parks.

In time, you will regain the excitement of Brutus when you save her for the special occasions. She will feel special and exciting again.:thumb:

Im actually thinking of a s210 7seater only a Cheap old plodder i can take the family out it. Keep Brutus for a drive experience.

Really love my 4 litre TT C63, it would be better with a NA engine but those days have gone......still miss my R172 SLK55, nothing has really comes close to the brute feel of AMG products.

So for me me it's AMG for sledgehammer performance and Lotus Elise S/F6 Porsche Boxster for the weekend scalpel!!

RR

I love mine. It's one of the few cars that makes me giggle when I start it and gives me sweating palms when I properly drive it on A or B roads. I have my AMG button programmed for gearbox in Sport+, Dampers in Sport and I select stability control to Sport Handling Mode.

I love the duality of it. Stick everything in Comfort and it will just cruise along like butter wouldn't melt in it mouth.

But when you pull out the city or off the motorway, road clear, and select your preferred sporty setup it's out and out bonkers on a fast A road with amazing turn-in, the steering is fast enough and the Limited Slip differential gives fantastic traction on judicious use of the throttle.

You can't keep your foot in for more than a few seconds otherwise you are going at very very serious speeds - but the stand out surprise for me is that my AMG is nothing like that cliché about 'they are all engine and no handling'.

It genuinely shrinks around you, feels smaller and is super easy to place on the road and very confident.

It's amazing.
