Hi all,

I'm trying to find out how many blue GL420 CDI's were built for the uk market?

It's our next chosen daily car and we will be getting one by the end of the year all going well. The only factor missus Uberwagon has said she must have is a blue one and to be fair I agree, too many silver and black ones which just look dull.

I asked at Mercedes Peterborough and they couldn't help me, I also asked at Mercedes Milton Keynes and they said the same thing.

If they made a fair few then it is worth searching for, if they only made say 10 then it's a pointless exercise and we will end up with a black or silver one, which i'm hoping is not the case.

Any ideas how I can search?

A 320cdi is definitely not an option.

Dave!

Don't know how many were sold in UK, but there are 11 GL420s for sale at the moment - but none of them Blue.

Only 1 blue one for sale and that's a GL320

Good luck!

After a few months i've been seeing similar numbers

I'm not in a position to buy yet but did think i'd see a few more blue ones randomly.

Dave!

I think the answer is not many but one will come up. You may well have to travel to get it or sacrifice on spec.
Hold out or get a more conventional coloured one or take the 320 one which will be ok power wise

When I was looking for a GL I had a similar issue. I wanted a dark colour, Black or Blue, I got to the point were I was going to sacrifice with a silver one (that had the Brabus chip too ;) )
I did come across a few Blue & Black GL420's but quite often they were silver or smoke silver. As others have said you will need to be prepared to travel or compromise on spec, there aren't a lot of GL420's in the UK.

OP, have you driven one? I had one as a rental in the states back in the summer and they're seriously big cars. Mahoosive, in fact.

If it feels big in the US I'm not sure I'd want to live with one in the UK, just parking it would be a bit of a 'mare. And the fuel consumption was comical - admittedly it was a petrol (GL450, 4.6 V8) but I drove it pretty gently and was rewarded with just 11 MPG (or ~13 MPG in UK terms). I guess the 2600 Kg kerb weight takes a lot of the blame for that..

Not wishing to rain on your parade or anything but just things to consider!

Cheers,

Gaz

It depends what you're comparing it with - it's narrower and shorter than a LWB R Class, for example. The GL is also narrower (and lower) than a Viano, and only 4" longer than the mid-size version (it's obviously shorter than a LWB Viano). Plenty of people drive R Classes and Vianos every day without any problems!

My mother-in-law's daily driver is an LWB R Class and we take the Vito into multi-stories etc. without any real issues (Parktronic helps though ;)).

Good point Bill, personally I'm quite happy driving big stuff - I spent a couple of years driving a 7.5 ton truck in my younger days. The GL was fine in a Las Vegas multi-storey, but it'd be a tight squeeze in the one just down the road..

Our old Finance Director had a LWB R class that I drove a few times, again I thought it was too big for the UK. Reverse parking on a side street.. no thanks. Give me the Panda any time!

We had the use of an ML500 and it's just as wide and only 300mm longer. Some car parks will be a pain but currently my everyday car is a 110 Defender with swing away carrier and roof rack so I'm used to it being a pain to park.

The 320 is ok power wise but it does feel like its working and I love engines which feel like they are barely trying, also fuel wise the difference is not worth worrying about.

A 420 has all the spec I'd ever need so asking as it doesn't have white leather it should be ok.

Hopefully one turns up and I don't need to risk the budget creep which is all too easy to let happen

if only it wasn't so lovely I'd find something else :p

Dave!

Mine's Cubanite. Beautiful. I went for it because of the black & silver thing. Plus, it has a massive spec, including the rare aircraft-style roof a/c, etc etc

I've had ladies approach me in car parks saying that they love the colour!
