Hi all
I've been offered a high mileage E300td the car has good body and decent history and is only £700 but its done 260k, is this toooo many to be reliable.

I dont know how long the turbo charger and autobox last on these, I assume the basic engine would be ok ( same as 124) I know its cheap but not if its destined to be scrap.

Phil

I would think that, like the W124, the W210 will dissolve into a pile of rust before the engine & box are no longer repairable

Just bear in mind that 250,000 is good going for an auto box. If it shifts smoothly I'd change the ATF and run it till something breaks

Another one?! you go through cars like i go through hot dinners :D

If it appears sold enough and runs for a year, its worth it IMO. Checking the usual stuff etc. These can go on for well past that mileage when looked after correctly so it may be fine. You'll probably always get a few hundred on ebay for it, so I reckon its worth the risk!! After a month, if you think it wont be reliable, sell it on and get your money back. £600 is very cheap for a W210 diesel.

I bought mine with 400k on it and it had the original gearbox and engine. I ran it for 2 years and had no real issues associated with mileage and had no trouble selling it on.
There are commonish issues worth looking for (not particularly deal breakers)
glow plugs can snap off , so watch out for glowplug warning light and rough running for a while after starting. Check that all the plugs are intact ie no-ones tried to change it and its snapped off already. They can be easy to change, but sometimes not!
Rust on the autobox intercooler pipes - this can lead to pinholes and leakage of autofluid - mine was wet around the bottom of the radiator
Air leakage into the plastic fuel pipes - check for bubbles in the clear pipes at the front - can lead to poor starting or no starting especially with a poor battery, made worse in the winter
Rust. I had it under the door seals and around the wings and boot lock. People have reported it on the crossmember on the front suspension but I have no experience of that

Apart from the rust, I thought mine was great and was sorry to see it go. I only really sold it because of the rust

A sore point, I sold my 124 as I was promised my new car would be ready this week, not only isnt it ready it got damaged in transit ! and they have no automatic loan cars

We need 2 cars so I'm going to get another cheap auto and decide what to do

i see - i'd say go for it then.... its always going to sell for atleast £600 on ebay i suspect

I found this statement very well hit on the head. And it made me chuckle, but oh how right he is.

Front spring perches or engine cross member can rot away. Not always visible under the factory sealant/ undertray. Can fail without warning. Check very carefully on car at that price.

Hi
Im not buying it, he tells me the box was "slipping a bit" a few months ago but he had an oil and ffilter change done and it seems ok now.

Got to find another car now, serves me right for trying to buy a new VW I suppose.

Hi

Properly maintained 250k is no prob for most cars nowadays.

Dont discount the car because of the slipping. It is possible that he had a leak on the electrical plug into the box causing low fluid and slipping and this was fixed and new fluid etc added and everything fine now.

Bet i have jinked my 291k miler now:eek:

230k

i would still go and see it. you'll always get your money back if its running and atleast half even if it is not (ie gearbox packs up).

if it were close to me, i'd snap it up

Perhaps the questions should be, Not how many miles can she do, but how log have you got?

Bought this today:o

My Dad got an 3L Elite one of those last year for not much.. Its big, fairly fast, not as comfy as my CE and has random warning lights come and go - but a lot of car for not much cash..

I prefer the Ford Scorpio - i think these are superb cars for very little money. A fully specc'd Ford Scorpio Ultima (late 97 facelift with the black'd out lights) would be a very nice car.

Almost got one instead of the 124 estate.

That's a shame, i was gonna vote in favour of the W210. Basically the same engine they used in the early sprinters, which i've seen 500k no problem.

I did see two private hire E220cdi's the other day with good miles, one was an 05 W211 with 216k and the other was a 52 W210 with 396k both were better in fantastic condition.
