So I'm looking back into this...

Car is a W208 230k 1999 (have a look at pics in my sig)

There is rust on lots of areas of the car - its not rotting, but there are small bits here and there (bootlid, arches, bonnet). The result is, every bodyshop I've taken it to have said that it will need a complete respray (same colour) and some parts rubbed down and treated.

The quotes have ranged from £1.5k to £3k. (The car's value is about £2.8-3k I'd say.)

What would you think is reasonable.

Thanks,
R

Is it metallic paint? That is crucial! Are the quotes just for painting, or repairing all the (hidden) rust spots? You may find the cheapest quoter doesn't want to know about the unseen patches, so make sure you know what you are paying for.

I think £2k to £2.5k. I resprayed my w210 for £2.5k and that was with the same garage Mercedes dealer works with. The other dealer partner came in at £3k.

Ouch, was that the E55 I presume?

It is metalic paint.

I had a quote of almost £3k to respray all but the roof of my 210, about 2 years ago - it didn't all need doing but they said that spraying every panel was the only way to avoid colour mismatch.

Then £150/panel (x10) plus rust repair, you get Barbanosos' figure.

Hopefully your car will be worth that much more afterwards, you'll know that the worst problem of Mercs of that era has been solved for a good while.

I've had various panels resprayed at different times by different indy operators who get the colour mix off the internet, I can see no mismatching at all.

I paid £1500 for bonnet and both sides with the inevitable rust in the arches - its a good job - rust has come back in one tiny place that is due to be fixed under warranty!

Hi John,

Can you let me know where you got this done?

Thanks. When you say the sides, I presume that insludes front and rear bumpers?

It really depends on the amount of preparation that is done. Ball park figure you're looking at somewhere between £300 and £600 worth of paint and materials. Beyond that it is about how thorough a job you do. Glass out, door seals off, door handles off, spray the shuts? You can easily spend days on dismantling, cleaning and re assembly. Always bear in mind that it costs a lot more money to remove a bad paint job from a car than it costs to put it on.

You can probably persuade someone to do a quick blowover for under a grand. On the other hand I'm currently restoring a car and we're 100 hours into doing preparation and filling, no paint has been sprayed yet........

Have a look at my E220 thread. That was a partial respray, no paint on the roof, no door shuts but proper prep on what actually needed doing.

Clive is the boss man there - very nice man indeed!!

front bumper but not boot or rear bumper!

Bonnet both sides and doors

You'll get exactly what you pay for.

Anywhere from £2-3k would be a realistic ballpark figure. You could probably get down both sides, bonnet and boot done for about £1500 or so, leaving the bumpers/roof/lower plastics etc.

Not really economically viable unless you love the car and plan to keep it for many years - in which case, are you going to fit new panels to avoid future rust problems reappearing?

Sell your car, add the proceeds to the respray money and then by a CLK that isn't rusting! :)

Full paint job on your CLK £ 1300 including paint and materials, blasting rust and treating with zinc primer the only way !
