Today I was travelling back from London and along the M40 the car entered its Reserve fuel level. So according to the display approx 82 mile left in the tank averaging 48mpg at the time.

Not long after getting on the M6 the display change from reading 42 miles left to a big red warning of the car an a fuel pump behind it and the last fuel bar in the digital display started flashing.

I'm not one for running out of fuel so at this point I started to panic as now I have no idea how much fuel is left in the car? The miles left disappeared replaced by the refuel icon.

Can anyone advise just as a guide how much fuel would be left in the car? I travelled another 10 miles or so till I could get fuel at jct 7 before continuing on my way.

What was your driving style when it suddenly shot down?

How many miles it's got left is predicted based on current MPG over an average period. So at 48mpg it might say you've got 82 miles left, but if you came off at a junction, a few roundabout starts and hard accelerations to motorway speed again and it'll think you'll do far fewer miles.

I'm not sure about the W205 but the reserve in the W204 is 8L.

This really annoys me on Mercs.

Why not just change the Miles Remaining to red so you know how much you have left??

Same driving style, I was on the m6 in light traffic. It counted down slowly from 82 to 42 miles left and then boom.... It disappeared leaving me with nothing more than a big refuel icon.

The w204 doesn't tell you the miles beyond a certain point in the reserve. Otherwise people would rely on it. (says 26 miles, 25 miles to next services, let's roll).

Don't know if it's different on the w205, but I wouldn't be concerned it hasn't suddenly drank a big gulp of fuel. If your driving style hasn't changed, then you'll know roughly how many miles you'll get out of it.

FYI, I've been that low on fuel a few times that the fuel gauge needle doesn't even lift a fraction of a mm off bottom pin, and it's still gotten me the few miles to the petrol station near my house. I've never ran out despite being "on empty" probably 10 times.
