How not to sell a car

The SL ad is badly put together, especially for a professional. The "don't bother us unless you want to talk about this car" bit doesn't bother me though. I'm more amazed that they couldn't even be bothered to remove the plastic seat protector before taking the photos. Have to wonder if that was intentional because of a large rip in the seat! And a total lack of detailed info - couldn't they be bothered to list all the options that they said it has? But having said all that, it looks a nice car.

You'd think they would have at least put the steering wheel in the straight ahead position and taken the plastic seat protector off for the photos.

At the end of the day I'd rather buy a good car from an idiot than a crappy car from a good bloke. And the car actually looks quite good and it would be on my list If was r129 shopping.

A think the Patina comment means they can't be bothered to polish it and up close it probably looks a bit grim.

I'm quite scared to think that someone is actually driving around in a V6 Corsa seemingly without telling his insurance company or getting the conversion checked. No wonder car insurance goes up every year.

Seems like they've had little interest as it's now an auction rather than a classified listing. Last classified price for it was £6795.

It 'looks' like a nice car but who knows...

There is another black one in w London that didn't meet it's reserve on ebay at £6195, but is now on Auto Trader for £7450.

This is now an auction and has reached £6,100 - curious to see what is ends up at with less than a day to go.

The black one I mentioned in an earlier post is less than straightforward - see this I put on another thread:

R129 sl500

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but the car that was the subject of this original thread is back:

Used Mercedes-benz Sl Class Convertible 500 Sl 2dr Auto in Lymington, Hampshire | Hills Of Lymington

At a slightly different price point - though if you find it on eBay the price is even more alarming...

MERCEDES 500SL (129 SERIES) ONLY 66,000 MILES | eBay

Yet it couldn't rustle up any interest beyond £6,100 originally...

Now if only I could stop tracking the used car market for R129 SLs

The long version would take a while, but the precis is "I'm a w****r with a shed, and I'm looking for a mug"....

The last time I tried to sell a car privately was 15 years ago. Since then I have always traded-in my cars (at considerable loss compared to private sale, as you would expect).

I still remember some of the calls I received at the time. The car was advertised at £9,800. One caller asked me first thing if the price is negotiable, I said that if by negotiable he meant reduce it by a couple hundred quid, then if he really wanted the car and wished to go ahead with the purchase, I might consider, but otherwise, no, the price was negotiable. He kept me on the phone asking various details (the car was immaculate, main dealer serviced, and being just two years old still had the remains of the manufacturer's warranty). At the end of the conversation he asked me if I would take £,6000 for it, and when I said no, he hung up and never called again.

Another caller asked the usual questions, plus some odd ones that were very difficult to answer... one such question was - upon learning that the car had standard (non-alloy) wheels - 'why does it not have alloy wheels?'. How do you even begin to answer that? There were more questions of this kind.

That was in the good old days of Autoloader and Loot... I can only imagine the depths of silliness some buyers can reach now that we have eBay.

I don't blame the seller of the SL500 for the wording in his ad.

Well just to add balance to the arguments, I have sold 2 cars privately this year, both sold within a week or two, did not budge on price by much (although I did make sure they were very competitively priced), sweet transactions to two very nice folk and probably 20% more in my pocket then the p/x route. Autotrader and pistonheads did it for me.

I was in Lymington last week, and noticed this car on the forecourt, so had a look. The doors looked out of alignment, and just didn't look quite right. I was left with the impression it may have had front end damage at some point.

I agree with most people that the seller's sentiment is understandable, but how he comes across is pretty dire!

I've sold a few cars on eBay and the amount of non-completing winners used to drive me nuts! The last couple I added the following wording to, and so far it seems to have done the trick:

IMPORTANT LEGAL STUFF - PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY

We have all seen a huge increase in non-completing bidders lately. Because of this I now sadly feel I have no choice but to set out the following terms:

By bidding on this car you are entering into a legal contract that confirms the following. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not bid:

- The winning bidder is legally required to complete the purchase of this car for the amount of their winning bid within 3 working days of the auction end. This includes full payment and collection of the car. I can sometimes extend this length of time if it is agreed in writing before the end of the auction.

- The winning bidder is required to pay a Holding Deposit of £199 within 24 hours of the auction end. This is non-negotiable and should be paid via PayPal or bank transfer only.

- Please be aware that any winning bidder who does not pay the Holding Deposit will then receive an invoice to their registered address for this amount. This invoice will be chased until settled, up to and including pursuit via the Small Claims Court at which point I reserve the right to add additional costs for our time and expenses. This will happen in all cases of non-payment, except for the following:
- Any winner who is not 100% satisfied with the car upon collection will have their Holding Deposit immediately refund with our most sincere apologies. I am always willing to discuss reasonable compensation for travelling expenses in these situations.
- I reserve the right to cancel the bids of any eBayer who has less than 10 pieces of positive feedback within the last 12 months.
- The winning bidder is responsible for any access to their account which they grant to other people. E.g. if another person bids for this car using your account, you will be held responsible for the purchase of the vehicle and/or the payment of the Holding Deposit.

I regret that I have to enforce these terms, but due to recent experiences we feel that we have no other choice...

Feel free to use this, if it's of help!
