How to add a custom made PC to your car

Interesting but I don't see the point of it really!

Reminds me of a time when we fitted a (Desktop!) PC into the back of a Lexus Coupe because the guy wanted teletext on his EMV (Sat-Nat screen). We installed a small keyboard in the glove box and a trakball in the centre cup holder ~ fun, but as pointed out .. all totally pointless really.

But then there was the karaoke system we installed c/w several microphones around the car .... You have to love 'money over sense'

not a bad concept if you think abt it, all your sat nav, MP3, divx movies, even computer games all onto the screen, you could integrate a USB connector to allow updates, and allow for a wireless card to get onto the internet for updates.

Your car already has several computers in it. They are disguised as the head unit and can bus network + fuse boxes.

Yeah, well, so has my washing machine, but I have a devil of a job typing a word document on it.

Personally I'd prefer a little more interoperability in a vision system (actually in everything), I see little point in paying for a replica of my PDA in the car, however certainly wouldn't mind paying money for a file transfer option, that way I get all the benefits of a Windows based sytem from the PDA with the AV capabilites of the car.

Everything does everything these days. But driving still needs driver attention.

If you want a unix based PC and mp3 player, consider

a RIO Empeg. It runs Unix, stores as many MP3/wav files as 2x2.5" discs will hold, powerful etc. Of its many options, 100TX Ether, USB, Serial connectivity is available and you can use your PDA as a head unit to it.

If you buy a V8 you don't need ICE :D
If you've been stuck in a queue for 3 hours then you might be glad of it, plus I'm sure there must be at least one V8 owner out there that has satnav!

He he, I had a Linux computer in my car (Renault 25) long time ago... :bannana:

I once had a Maestro Vanden Plas that said "Warning! Low oil pressure!" and other cheery things. The only useful thing about the computerised dash was that you could switch the display between mph and kph.

Bill were you a Leyland employee at some point? You had a Montego too didn't you....

No, and yes! The Maestro VDP was actually a very good car, the Montego was great but rusted away.

The Siemens head unit in the S, SL, CL runs on Windows CE .... so I guess we are all behind the times.

Hi, I translated those messages from English in Dutch that time I had that Renault 25. You should see those faces of the mechanics when the vehicle was in the garage for service. :p

Now I have a challenge with this C220 I drive. Will see if I can hack in that Fiber Optics, got already some nice cables from Germany.

Have fun,
bt

i considered this when I had my CLK. I was going to have the computer go via the Comand screen.

I think there is an old post of it on here somewhere.....

ended up just connecting a dvd player that played mp3 cds to comand instead, as i guessed thats all i would use the car PC for (mp3's)

Sure but I want to install about 300Gb (hd) of Ogg files ;)
