How do I change the ABS ring on 2006 A Class?

The ABS ring on the front near side wheel is loose. The ring rotates freely around the drive shaft/hub.

I am not familiar with this design as I cannot see any slots or teeth for the sensor to pick up. Does anyone know how this system works and how the ring fits in and is secured.

What is annoying is the MOT man picked up that the ring was loose but the ABS was still working. A week later, yes it decided to stop.

The reluctor rings I've seen in the past are usually an interference fit and come loose when they crack after getting corrosion underneath. If new ones aren't available Araldite does a good job of securing them back in place if the budget doesn't run to a new shaft. Put a Jubilee clip around the ring while the glue sets.

Thanks Spike but my ring does fit around the shaft it appears to be pushed into the hub. It is the shiny ring in the photo and the sensor is the protrusion coming in from the right at about 2 o'clock.

I can seen behind the ring but there is nothing obviously there. I don't know if something has fallen out from behind the ring, whether the ring is just a cover etc. I looked at the off side front wheel to compare and it looks the same from the outside, the only difference is the ring on the off side is still firmly fixed in place.

Sorry, should've looked at pic 1st, the ones I've dealt with are the toothed kind.

It comes as part of the wheel bearing, you need to replace the wheel bearing. Just be sure to fit it the right way round

Aha, that makes some sense. I've not seen that design before and didn't want to start ripping bits apart.

Thanks for the pointer.

Managed to change the front breaking today, it was a nightmare getting the bearing out the hub. I needed a hydraulic press and 8 ton of force.

Put it all back together and tried the car, the ABS light went out then about 30 secs later all the ABS warning lights came on again.

Is there any way to check the cable to make sure the sensor is working?

Dud the bearing go in the right way round?
You may need to get the fault codes cleared for system to work properly.
If you get it on star you can read the actual values & check that the wheel speed is being picked up when you spin the wheel.
