How to fix unsightly, but not terminal, rust?

Mid 2000s onwards are no where near as bad as 1990s-early 2000s but compared to a typical Fiat or Renault it's a sh1ty show. I had a 2007 C Class with exact same issue (at 8 years old). I had a 1999 C class (also at 8 years old) that was dissolving like a 70s Lancia... so some improvement!

The body shop have to remove the clear protective patches at the bottom of the rear wings near the sills - are these available and are they really needed ??

Or just get some made up out of PPF. - Dont fit them for a couple of weeks until the paint has fully hardened though.
