Since the Audi is now written off, I have started looking at buying another car, I think we have been lucky so far as I have never had any of the cars I have HPI just wondering were is the best place to do this I assume I can do it online? Do I just need the reg number? What sort of cost? Any site suggestions would be great...

Another service is Experian. Virtually identical to HPI.

I used HPI when buying the Wifes car and it was really good because it told me the car was on finance with VAG Finance so I rang them up and paid them directly, with the vendors permission.

I knew it was on finance but not who with.

We use the R.A.C about £39.99 and they give you results over the phone and send you a guaranteed result certificate as well.

didn't someone have a problem with RAC not honouring their fraud promise. they said the car didn't show as being on finance at the time of the check.

I'd stick to HPI or Experian as they are the industry finance watch houses. They know before anyone else.

used Experian for a personal credit report. Interesting to see who makes checks..Car insurance for the last two years, even though I pay up front. I suspect they are verifying the address and status.

I used to use an on-line company that charged £9.99 and the info was a slimmed down version of HPI, in fact the info came from HPI but it looks like they have withdrawn from the market.
There's always the Ebay service which is cheap and HPI sourced.
