Go for it! Should be a damn sight more fun to drive!

Awesome

I don't know too much about these engines but I think I read somewhere that they are prone to cracked exhaust manifolds and they're really expensive. Might be worth asking if the one in the pic is okay?
Haven't you got enough projects on the go Ian?

Assuming that I get all the bits required this is a long term project. Block re bored, new pistons, new bottom end, head skimmed and polished and new oil pump. I have another project that has preference at the moment (V8) but you have to plan ahead.

Yep - the early 2.3s suffered a poor design on some of the welds and can crack, later addressed with a revised manifold that has better strengthening near the welds. A replacement manifold from Mercedes is over £1100+VAT last time I checked.

Aside from that, the timing chain, sprockets, guide rails and tensioner are over £1000 in parts alone too - another weakness on the 2.3.

Not realistically a worthwhile project IMO when there's some much better alternatives for the W124 in regard to engine choice :)

Maybe buy it cheap and sell the manifold (and other parts) separately?

If the price is right??? yes. Remember its a non runner Ian and dont get carried away if you bid. The guy mentions "yard" in his description does he mean "scrapyard" or his back garden? Surely he must have an idea the bits are worth quite lot so I would be wary. you would want the electrical bits ignition module and ECU plus associated wiring also from the donor car also.

Thanks Greame, It is a scrap yard, not obvious from his advert but then look at his other items  I am beginning to think this was a bad idea. Thats what I like about this forum, good honest answers.

ian, I personally would not go for it, esp after what Will has said. Even if you are doing the work yourself, the parts alone will run into '000's. I doubt if you'll ever get your money out when you come to selling your car.
