Or, rather identifying a different colour, compatible type to replace them with (white).

The original LEDs are orange, and there are two types - the top section ones are 4-pin, and the bottom sections ones are 2-pin (might also be a 4-pin ones, but soldered in as 2-pin)

There are three different markings on the 12 LEDs, which light up the top section of the LCD, though they all look identical:

AF6$ ; AEWT ; AF6Z

The lower section of the LCD is lit up by nine identical LEDs, all marked: AXNL

I want to replace these with white LEDs (about 5000ºK), and would be grateful if someone can advise on a compatible type.

:)

The 4 pin ones at the top look to be 3528 Dual colour LED and the last one a 3528 single colour.

But if you cannot locate the exact ones, best way forward is to measure the V supplied to the LED and on what pads. I would expect between 2.0 and 2.6v then you can just slot in something that matches the same characteristics.

A lot of thought has gone into the wavelength of those instrument panel lights. I’d think hard about swapping out orange for white which will be awful at night.

You could try using the search function on Digikey or Mouser

Thanks chaps, I'll try both suggestions.

The LCD is exactly the same type, which Mercedes later used with white backlit LEDs, when they switched to blue background, white letters displays, so NO, it won't be awful at night ;)

Here's a couple of pics (one full resolution) to show the size, type and positioning better:

Do they not swap between white during the day and orange at night like BMW?
They look like dual colour LEDs.

They do look like dual colour LEDs, but no, the instrument cluster central display is always orange/yellow, though I suspect the brightness might be adjusted, once the 58d signal is transmitted by the SAM.

In fact, I think the background is way too bright as it is now, so dark blue would be much better:

Same with blue LED under it:

White LED light will be free from that purple tinge, and will give a nice blue background, with white letters - just like the next generations of Mercedes clusters was, before the colour ones appear.

Maybe the display colour would change for an urgent issue, like my old girl would turn the display RED if there was something urgent that needed to happen

I take it the odometer reset button doesn't twist for dimming on that model?

Of course - now I remember seeing red letters in the top section once (wasn't my car). Thanks! :)

I'm not having much joy finding a dual colour 3528 LED, where one is white - don't particularly mind the other colour, as long as the white is at the same contact as yellow on mine.
Alternatively both can be white, or might need an expert advice on whether it's possible to solder two-pin LEDs instead.
