I know (hope!) you can't get them anymore, but these b&^*($ things are a royal PITA. I've just had two fail on me ... one in my CCTV server; came back from holiday to find the system down and failing to reboot (it has an auto reboot) and this morning, my main dev PC has gone down :( . Fortunately, I only used the IBM drive as the WINXP drive; data is on a separate drive (and backed up to a different server).

Both drives that have failed are IBM f*&^*^(% Deskstars! I'd read about all the problems these drives had, but mine had been fine (ha!). So that's two XP OS' to install today, along with all the updates and apps (do have a Ghost CD for my dev pc from some time ago, but not sure if it will bork with a different drive?).

If any of you have one of these, change them out, for they will fail :(

Still, didn't have anything better to do today, you know, like you don't after you've had a week's holiday ...

Someone else makes them now. I have had a few - both IBM and whatever the latest branding is and the are OK.

They don't call them Deathstar's for nothing though!

Ah-so

IBM hard drives including Deskstar line bought over by Hitachi. Probably after Executives drinking too much saki one night!

didnt ibm dump their drive company after they realised they had to honour the 3 year warranties?

Get a nice seagate , and blast the ghost disk onto it. Ive not had a problem going western digital to seagate in the past . I don't think the type of drive affects ghost images or even the size of the drive

This is proving to be rather trying :( Thought I'd go with a pair of Seagate Barracudas. I've dealt with Inmac (MicroWarehouse) for years as they aren't far from me and I can collect ... and given that I can't do any work until I get sorted, I'm anxious to get the drives bought and installed. Found out today that they've shut down the Runcorn depot (Shude, does/didn't your mate work there?), so that's really helpful.

Can't find anywhere else locally (apart from PC World), so going to have to order from Overclockers for delivery tomorrow :( I've got work to do! :D

Yep, I remember reading about IBM getting rid; for some reason the debacle impacted their reputation  I do have another, working IBM drive (not a Deskstar) in my storage cupboard, but not going to chance it. "Nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" ...

we used to call them deathstars

my company just bought 20 hitachi 500gb drives ......all faulty

D.O.A .....I Told them.....but they never learn!

hitachi=ibm

In my opinion I would buy seagate or maxtor drives

Goto be careful here... but I must agree that the reliability of HGST IDE and SATA drives dont seem to last the 3 year warranty period with 2.5" drives being the worst of all with most rarely seeing out 12 problem free months.

The SCSI disks seem to be more high end with much better reliability however.

Well, two Seagate Barracudas have just turned up from Overclockers, so that's my morning sorted :D

No votes for Western Digital then? I had a couple of duds when 340MB drives were new and didn't touch them for many years after. I've got quite a few now, along with some Maxtors and none have given me any grief.

As for the Deathstars, I've had every single one of them die now.

Caviar series had a loads of duffers in it back in the old days, thousands were returned.

I will be buying a Maxtor drive to go in my TiVo soon, comes with a 5 year warranty, none of that 1 or 3 year rubbish :)

Inmac/MicroWarehouse are gone now, they're owned by Dixons/PC World! My friend who worked there has moved to their Bury office, it was either that or the job centre IIRC.

As you can imagine, he's really happy with the situation. He used to work for PC World Business Direct and fell out with them, he got a job at Inmac/MicroWarehouse/MacWarehouse but hated the journey from Rochdale to Runcorn (I can understand that, did it myself for a few months) so he moved to Warrington to be closer to work. Now the evil company he used to work for owns his job and he has been forced to move to an office 5 minutes from where he used to live in Rochdale and he's doing the reverse of the journey he hated. Great eh?

seagate are the best drives , followed by western digital and then maxtor.

the maxtor drives are like mini stoves.

Aha! That's why, when I phoned them up, I ended up speaking to a nice chap in India who had never heard of Runcorn :D

Can imagine your mate is seriously miffed with them. I'll have to have a ride down and see who's in there now ... it's a massive warehouse.

The one I want is a 5400rpm so it's cool-running and quiet.
The new ones I've got are 7200rpm, but they are so much quieter than the IBM ones - can hardly tell the computer's on.

The HDD in my current PC is a seagate barracuda IV with fluid bearing, it really IS silent :)

Wish I stayed in Scotland now ...

Copied over a Ghost image onto the new SATA drive; succeeded, but couldn't get it to boot (yes, used the MB drivers). Tried everything; XP Repair, Repair Console, PartitionMagic ... have given up using the SATA as a boot device and it is now a data drive and everything is hunky ...

... and then my Iiyama VM Pro 510 22" monitor blows up

Now using a 15" LCD until I can get a replacement. "Character building", apparently
