Yes, I know don't be surprised :)

Has anyone ever thought about having a 'live' workshop via the forum?

Let me clarify, during the week one of the members (engine thread) posted that he wanted to remove the manifold from the engine to get at the glow plugs - no problem, many helpful people posted advice and off he went well prepared for the weekend job in hand.

Halfway through the job he came back on and posted his progress along with a couple of questions which were duly answered and he continued with the job.

Take this a step further and you could have a 'duty' member on standby over the weekend to help, he could even be a professional and paid for giving up their time.

Any thoughts on this ?

(I can just feel those stones hitting me head now :D)

It's an interesting idea, however I'm not sure how practical it would be to become a regular 'feature'. Those on standby as it were, would be putting in a lot of time.

Also, who would pay?

Like I say, good idea though :D

Maybe it just needs to be simpler and broader. There are people who are great at the oily and technical side of owning a car - and those who have zero idea what they're doing and everyone in between.

HOW ABOUT somewhere to post maintenance tasks which others can physically help with, but pay a pre-agreed nominal fee.

e.g Gucci in SE London needs help changing brake pads. Then someone would reply with a PM saying 'I'd be prepared to help on Saturday for £50 and a man bag voucher'.

Yup, open to ideas but I think the thing that trips people up is the unexpected when taking stuff apart -

To make it practical you would need one person to cover lots of 'live' workshops so it would need to be someone with a broad range of skills across the models -

We could have a separate area on the forum for members to post their weekend workshop requests which are then picked up -

I am sure a lot more members would try things if they had this level of support - the other advantage is you know you have an answer to a problem straight away which is important if its your daily driver.

Given the amount of people with knowledge, I've found replies here VERY fast... so fast that I must admit to posting a question here when the first page google threw at me had no results :p (or when things are time-constrained... like the night before my infamous court case!)

Gucci - I really like the "helping hand" idea... I might have a man bag some relative gave me a few years ago for Christmas - you can have it to pay your helper :p

Group workshops maybe more effective if they were scheduled on the forum, ie.. Weekend workshop for removal and replacement of glow plugs on engines OM 606, 605 ect..

This way you could have one member helping lots of other members at the same time, posting screen shots for the group -

Back to the lovely weather :)

Sounds like a lot of responsibility, remember what happened when someone offered to have a look at a cosworth a few years back?
