Ignition barrel playing up...

Hi, my 1997 E320 has recently developed a (seemingly) minor problem in that it doesn't start first time sometimes. The key turns in the barrel but there is no ignition or a slight 'connection' - sounds like the starter turns for about 1/4 of a turn. Pulling the key fob out then re-inserting usually solves this, although it is not always necessary to pull the key out before restarting. It happens about once a week.

Any suggestions?

Cheers
Andy

Keep your fingers crossed that it's not the EIS, mine went recently at a replacement cost of £410, can only be done by MB since the unit has to be re-coded into the car and only MB HQ supply the code.

Agree. It does rather sound like the EIS going. Big pain the bum job if it it is. Mine went on my W202:(

Thanks for the replies. What is an EIS?

Electronic Ignition System. It accepts your key and works the Elcode function and nearly everything else as well. When it fails it a main dealer job and as well as a new EIS you need to get a Green keyy from the factory in order to program it to your car. I hope it turns out to be something else for you.

It's going in on Monday for new ball joints on the front susp. I'll mention it to the bloke who runs the workshop I use - it is however only that, a small workshop so hope it isn't the EIS - I haven't used the main dealer for years!

Thanks
Andy

Ouch. Have just had to get my EIS replaced at a cost of £500. Symptoms were key would not physically turn after being inserted. Maybe a silly question but does anyone know how long an EIS should last? If I should expect to replace it again in a couple of years time, It would be good to know now....

Car is a 1999 E320CDI estate, for info.

It should last the lifetime of the car!
