the key will unlock the doors, but when inserted in the ignition will not turn to start the car, however if i disconnect the battery, then reconnect it, it will start?

any ideas what the problem is?

Thanks

If you have an automatic is the car in park?

Regards,

Yes, the car is an automatic, and it is left in P (park) as you cannot remove the key if it is not.

it's as though it doesn't remember the key and by disconnecting the battery it resets it? but i don't really understand what is going on!

can you help?

Have you tried the spare key for comparison...?

Usually, when the key is inserted it makes a "woosh" type noise which has something to do with the power steering.

yes, i've tried the spare key and it's the same, which makes me think it's something to do with the car. The car must have some way of recognising the keys, anyone know what this is?

Sounds like the ignition barrel is not recognising the key and needs a reset. A Dealer job I am afraid, or you could try ringing Mobilo, if your car is still covered, as you cannot start it.

Or try cleaning the key first to remove any dirt or grease.
