From what I saw when I was looking around, the W202 has a forced airflow system (i.e. the air is scooped from the from and rammed into the engine). You will find that putting a cone filter and not sealing the box will actually reduce your perfomance rather than raise it.

What iwll happen is the cone will suck warm air from the engine, while losing all the lovely cool air that the stock kit rams in.

So you need to decide, noise or performace?

If its noise, get any old cone, remove your airbox and fit it (you may even want to try fitting it inside the old airbox to protect it a little from the warm engine air)

IF its performance, fit a New filter, I believe K&N do some that replace the stock ones..

Try a green cotton filter, I've done about 80k miles with one and I don't think it's done any harm, compared to Graham's 5 miles with a K&N which ate his MAS!

My k&n has been fine and I love the throttle response and improved noise!

Thats the one! Shude quick question, how often do you need to oil your filter? I've thought of changing, but I tend to be quite forgetfull ...

I've never oiled it. The filters are so cheap I was thinking about throwing it away and replacing with a new one TBH.

Green Cotton is good advise. I think R2D2 was alucky - he must have fuitted his K&N when his MAS was still healthy enough to take the change!

In general they are known to be MAS killers - I shuned this advise and payed the cost of a new MAS.

Have a read on www.club202.com - a few people have done induction kits on 230Ks there. Remember you have the recirculation from the SC to think about too - I personally have no idea what is involved technically though.

Sorry but are we talking forced induction here or just a change of filter?

Only... if you are looking to turbo charge your W202 then perhaps the thread you are after is HERE

Change of filter. That would be some mod to Turbocharge a supercharger.

Well.....

Thank you for all your responces and after a headache of reading through
all threads, reply's ect... :)

Im thinking im gonna go safe with a replacement Filter as my luck with car's
is to say the least... S**T and i just know that after all that has been said
I'LL be the one who get's every problem going.

So no "ROAR" from this little purring kitten.
Just another sweet W202.

Thank's for putting up with me :bannana:

You will find that the new filter improves the response of the engine and does change the tone a little at higher rpms, I always thought the 230k engine sounded a little strained when pushed but the filter makes it sound a little happier :)

If you want your car to sound more impressive stop wasting time with filters and get the s/c pulley changed, then it will whine like a turbo, and if you swap the exhaust for something a bit beefier the sound will be perfect, it sounds exactly like a baby version of the SL55 or the SLR :D . Also adds up to about 50bhp depending on supplier and level of tuning :) .

s/c pulley?
superchargers are driven by a pulley running off the engine, rather than on exhaust gases like a turbo.

Change the pulleys for larger/smaller ones (depending on which pulley) and you can safely increase the amount of air forced into the engine by up to about 50%.

Pulleys start at about £300 from some nameless places up to about a grand from the likes of Kleemann and Brabus, but the effect is basically the same.

Unlike software tuning, high performance spark plugs, cotton air filters etc which "could add up to 5% more power" this is proper engineering with decent results! :)

All true, but despite the popularity of this modification in the US and to an extent mainland Europe, I have never found or spoken to anyone that has completed this task in the UK.

sound's all good to me, i shall have to have a look out for tuning parts.
And you know what, when i had my services about 6 weeks ago i had to
replace two pulley's and they had a hard job finding them
as they wasnt the "usual size" dont know if these were the same one's you are on about but i will find out soon. Very odd.
I see i have a long way to go with all this modding going's on.
All good fun though a.
Thank's again.
