I hope someone can shed some light on this pleases have a w210 e220cdi and recently noticed that I had a broken wire on the intake air temp sensor. Once I had fixed the wire I noticed that the car began to smoke on acceleration. The smoke isn't black but more greyish in colour yet if I disconnect the sensor the smoke stops. I know obvious thing to say would be leave it disconnected then but have to say car has less poke with it disconnected. What I'm wondering is does this sensor in some way control the egr opening and closing and if I do leave it disconnected will it do any damage to the engine?

I believe you have your intake temperature sensor not functioning correctly and your air/fuel mixture isn't being done correctly...
so I would personally advise you to get your car to a Mercedes dealer shop or Independent Mercedes shop to get your readings from a Star Software... air fuel ratio is calculated in real time according to various factors: air intake temperature, air intake pressure, quantity of CO2 being expelled by exhaust, O2 presence in exhaust, temperature of exhaust gases, volumetric efficiency of combustion, throttle pedal position, engine revs, absolute engine load, and many other factors that the ECU take in account all the time to adjust the timing and aperture of the injector nozzles...
the color of the smoke does not scare anyone by being greyish, but it is smoke and so it means something... it could simply mean that you have bad quality fuel in your tank, but it also can mean you have a malfunctioning part in your engine...
get it properly revised and you may find you are spending unnecessary fuel on a wrongly adjusted air/fuel ratio...
oh and by the way... Merry Christmas... Oh! Oh! Oh!
