Intermittent kompressor, advice please.

So is the purge valve is supposed to tick ?

Hi all,

When my kompressor started to fail the purge valve made a very loud ticking sound, so loud that I could clearly hear it over the sound of the engine (this is the reason why my attention was drawn to it). After replacing the valve and carbon cannister the kompressor has been fine ever since and the ticking sound could no longer be heard.

The cost of a purge valve is about £70 but I managed to buy one from eBay (second hand) from Germany for 10 Euros + P+P. The carbon canister (which is about 18" in length and is tucked away up in the rear, off side wheel arch behind the wheel arch cover) was about £40 but that was with a bit of discount.

The purge valve does not seem to be noisy anymore at idle or at high revs. If it does tick it is now very quiet as I can't hear it over the noise of the engine but you can hear it tick listening to it through a screwdriver. I renewed the carbon canister because it was probably choked up, the Haynes Manual says to change it every 30,000 miles, mine hadn't been done for 200,000.

So between the valve and canister the only conclusion I can think of is to why they caused my car problems was because they must have been upsetting the balance of the emissions and forcing the ECU to go into limp home mode thus shutting down the kompressor in the process.

Cheers
BigD

wow what a read think this is what is wrong with my car as i do get the ticking and lag now and then.

Is it possible to fix a BOV or dump valve and would it help or even make that "chav" noise on an auto?
