iPod in 2003 SL500 - my solution

Update....

I've just finished fitting the power supply. I took a 12v feed off the bottom of the cigarette lighter ( using 2 black cables as that's all I had, I did mark each end of the + with red tape ) and passed it through the center console back to the storage bin where I'd fitted a 12v Socket...

pls ignore the camera shake, was reassembled before I noticed.

Superb posting. Very well explained. Thanks for sharing.

Did you fit a 12V cigaratte lighter in the boot? (Last pic).

The new 12v socket is in the storage bin where the rear seats would be, just behind the passenger seat. It's exactly the same part as the boot socket which was factory fitted in my car. So I now have 3 sockets in the car.

I'm confused.
If you already had a factory fitted 12V socket in the boot, could you not have got your switched supply from that? (in stead of running a cable from the front socket.)

The iPod dock is inside the cabin of the car so running from the front socket was easiest, especially as I had to repair the ashtray release anyway ( only had to remove one extra piece of trim to get access ). If I ran the feed from the boot I'd have had to remove all the boot trim to route the cable.

Oh I see what you mean. Sorry I thought the Dock, Tuner and CD changer were in the boot of your car.

Makes sense now.
