I am just about to take a trip around Europe visiting France,Andorra,Spain,Italy and Switzerland and have bought a tomtom go live 825 from fleebay, it is just one year old and when I switch it on it says "current map out of date" is it worth updating it at a cost of £41-50 or would you leave it ? Has the roads changed that much in a year to warrant an upgrade ? :dk:

I have a moody copy of French maps on CD for Command if you have it.... worked fine for me in my CLK500 a few years ago.. however its for the earlier Command... Mine was a 2002... Free to you if you have command...

No I dont have it I just have the tomtom but thanks very much for the offer its much appreciated......:thumb:

I wouldn't bother if it's only 12 months old. Last time I updated mine was 3 years ago and haven't had any problems, but I've only used it in UK, France and Belgium.
I doubt that there have been any changes to the major routes and very few, if any to the minor roads. You could always buy a cheap current road atlas, which I consider a must have item anyway.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip. :bannana:

As grumpy said - not worth updating it. Use it together with a bit of common sense (ie looking at road signs as well) and you won't have any trouble.

Have a great trip - sounds good.

PS Make sure you don't have speed camera function available while you're in France - it's illegal there. I think the Go 800 series automatically disables the function when you're in France, but best to check first.

If you have the money burning a hole in your pocket then update the cartography, but unless you're planning on relying upon the POI information I wouldn't worry too much. The reality is that due to the time lag between the roads survey data being collected and the publication of the cartography, you will always find something that's incorrect somewhere, even if you do update the device. While you're unlikely to run into serious difficulties with roads having changed, be aware that access restrictions or one-way systems may have been implemented in cities that aren't reflected in your version of the cartography so don't blindly follow the navigation instructions.

Do make sure that you don't have any speedcam data loaded for either France or Switzerland as it's an offence to use GPS-based warning systems in both those countries. Also make sure you keep within the limits in Switzerland as the fines for even a minor infraction are now very high. For a significant infraction they are eye-watering, and the Swiss authorities will chase you through the UK courts for unpaid fines.

Have a great trip!

Thanks Phil for the very sound advice :thumb:

Our discs in the CLK/SLK are 2008. The becker cascade mapping in the 124 must be at least 8 years old and its still perfectly serviceable. As long as you use it as a guide rather than slavishly following every uinstruction it will be fine.

As above, I treat map upgrades like buying a new road atlas ... every few years.

One point to bear in mind with TomTom though is that they periodically have sales and special offers, I've never paid anything like full price for new maps.

You lads down South, whats the best way to get to Dover on a Saturday afternoon from the A1, not the shortest but the best way that could avoid the traffic.I know most places in England but down to Kent is my least travelled.

Personally, I'd take the A14 south of Peterborough onto the M11, then the M25 over the Dartford Crossing to Swanley and finally the M20 to Dover.

That's the way we are going on Tuesday, over Woodhead and down the M18 to the A1
