Is the 7g gearbox really that bad?

Diesel.

And I tried an E500 coupe with 7g. Better gear spacing but it was really jolty but the car was so fast I didn't care.
Apart from a brief drive in a ml280cdi i've only driven 7g petrols & never experienced any problems/harsh changes up/down.

I drove a few of those and never managed to work out the most suitable settings. It all came down to guess work in the end!!

There is no one setting for all conditions. So I programed the "M" button to the fastest setting and accessed it when in the mood.

Had the 5G and now have the 7G+ autobox, both on diesels. No problems or complaints about either.

And one of the many advantages of a large petrol engine is that pulling away in 2nd is still easily fast enough for just about every occasion :).

...and the same should also apply to the turbodiesel torque profile. I find the C mode suits my 320cdi for typical urban driving. Then if more go is required, kickdown always takes off in 1st and revs past the mode-preset shift points.

+1

Incidentally, there was a thread fairly recently where a member was warned (by whoever was working on his car) not to use C mode by default, because 1st gear wouldn't get lubricated by use. I didn't realise at the time, but that is incorrect because 1st is used regardless of mode until trans and engine reach operating temp.
