Is there something wrong with my W204?

Hi again

New MB owner so my paranoia is getting the better of me!

Had my w204 for about two weeks now and I love it. I do have a few questions regarding the car that someone may be able to shed light on. It's a 58 plate auto 5 speed.

1. Firstly I notice that this engine is much louder than my e60 diesel. It sounds more tractor like on idle and low speeds. At high speed or cruising it goes silent. Anything wrong there? I've kept a keen ear out for other 4pot diesels and it sounds similar to them, but the E60 was 6cyl so much quieter.

2. When the car is in neutral the car idles smooth but put it in reverse or drive on idle or stopped and it will feel more rough. Vibrations in the car and shifter. Is there something I should be worried about? Nothing too bad, you can just feel a bit more vibrations.

3. Lastly at v low speeds like 10/15 mph the car will jerk about a little. Shifting up and down?

Oh and i checked oil levels an its just below middle but the oil on the stick is black lol

Just little issues been bugging me so I wanted some insight if possible

With 58 PLATE [2008] you will have the earlier OM646 single turbocharger engine . https://translate.google.com/transl...ercedes-Benz_OM_646/OM_647/OM_648&prev=search This will sound more "agricultural" than the later OM651 engined cars but is reckoned to be more mechanically robust and easier to repair. The E60 straight 6 is always going to be better balanced than a 4 pot. As your car is nearly 7 years old it may be the engine/gearbox mounts are showiing their age a bit . On the other hand it just may need a bit of getting used to?

I have the same car and I thought the same, ended up getting it serviced with a full automatic gearbox oil change, engine oil changed to mercedes 5-40 fully synthetic oil as I don't have a dpf filter, this in turn made a slightly smoother and quieter drive.
I am now running 250ml of mineral based 2 stroke oil in with a full tank of diesel and this has again made it even more smoother and quieter, only real dislike to the car now is the way it hangs onto 1st gear whilst slowly moving away, gearbox oil change made this slightly better but under some situations stills does the hanging on bit, hope this info helps!!

With a 204, in C mode accelerating normally, she'll change up at 3k RPM, in S mode it holds the gear to 3500 RPM - unless you tap the stick to the right and force it to change up earlier!

Cheers all,

So from my understanding all seems to be OK?

The gear changes are not jerky as such, and the car has apparently had a full service recently but checking the dipstick, the oil seems to be black in colour?

By no means does the car sort of judder or shake which is good, I guess I was just getting used to the slightly more noisy engine/manner of driving.

I have noticed that the car hangs onto gears a fair bit yes - The car is only on 50 thousand miles so perhaps a simple oil change should fix any niggles?

Fresh oil in a diesel engine will go black virtually straight away

Mine does the same its kind of annoying, I tried the TUC reset (think that's what it's called?) and it made a slight difference

I have similar concerns with my recently purchased 58 plate 220cdi and spoke to Mike at MB Medway last week. He has had a number cars in recently with engine mounts that have needed replacing. This bears out grobers comment above.

My car has a MB warranty but unsure how to get them to check/ confirm I actually have the same issue? Apparently not easy to check without taking bits apart? Comments gratefully received as the noise is getting annoying :wallbash:

Any thoughts at all?

My 58 c220cdi has a more metallic sound at idle and cold than other diesels I have had. Cruise is quiet tho.

No vibration or shimmy, and in C gear changes are early.

C is 2nd gear actually.

Just to echo what someone said earlier. Get some decent mineral 2stroke oil and put 250-300ml in a full tank of diesel.

It really does quieten things down.

Might be worth also before that sticking a can of BG244 in.
