Car
It's a car - just a car!
...nine tenths of the time, there is nothing a McLaren or Bugatti can do in today's traffic conditions that any modest family runaround can't do far more comfortably and efficiently...

I smiled when I read this assertion by a newspaper columnist commenting on the fact that the first ever Ford Focus had come top of a poll of the best cars over the last 25 years...

Most of us disagree, of course. But essentially, he is right. So why are we so passionate about our fancy cars?? Are they worth the time, trouble and expense we devote to them??

I guess it's proportional to the amount of spare income we have. I doubt it's ever really worth it, but we do it because it gives us pleasure.

I think there are three types of blokes;

1. Those, like nearly all of us, that have a genuine interest in cars.

2. Those that are not sure about the ins and outs, they just understand the supposed hierarchy of car brands/marques.

3. Women.

It would be difficult to get a single bed with drawers and mattress into the back of the Focus.

Never stopped numerous conceptions in Essex though...

If the only car I could drive was a Focus, I think I could live with it.

Our cars are worth it to us, and that's all that matters. What we chose to spend our money on is up to us. We all have different likes and needs so we all make different choices. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to spend thousands on jewellery, shoes or handbags - but that's their choice and good luck to them (as long as it's not SWMBO who wants them!)

Jewelry, Handbags and shoes for gods sake. How can one get pleasure from them i'll never ever know. Now bikes and cars sounds better.

Nothing wrong with the Focus it's a very competent car and the ST and RS versions will give most cars a run for their money, I can see why it came top :thumb:

A comment like this just highlights that you have totally missed the point and will never get it!

As far as worth is considered, the main reason I like Mercedes is the value for money and fantastic comfort.
When it comes to supercars or other excessive toys they are of course non essential, if i didn't enjoy them I wouldn't buy them.

However, when the 'sensible lot' sell there popular little whizbangs they loose money.

Having never owned a Bugatti or a McLaren, I can't comment on them, however I do know that I'd take a Mercedes over a Focus every time. Yes, a Focus will be cheaper to run and a much better drive on a challenging B-road than my W202. However, there is a feeling that you get from a Mercedes that you just don't get with other cars. It's got nothing to do with showing off your posh motor and everything to do with a sort of intangible 'Mercedes-ness'. I can pick out some details of it, such as the heavy, organ throttle pedal and the Tempomat cruise control stalk, but mostly it's the warm, fuzzy feeling you get every time you drive it. It's difficult to describe in words, but I did see a review of the W212 E-Class Coupe which summed it up quite well as 'a reassuring arm around your shoulder in a world gone mad'.

Ford focus vs merc?

I would never like to be without a convertible car in my life, and this is something Mercedes do best.

Apart from the badge at the front, ....

Oooh Badge snobbery lol :D

Must admit mine is a biased opinion though as I did most of the development driving work for the Focus particularly the ST and RS versions
