Just playing around with a laptop sometime boots sometimes doesnt. narrowed the fault down to the HD and replace it, all is fine with the new drive. On trying to format the old drive, disk formatted and then after Format complete came up with 'Unable to write Boot' Is that terminal?? Its a 20GB 4200Rpm 2.5" IBM Travelstar.

If it's showing any signs of failing I wudn't trust it as a main drive. B nice to kp it as like a backup-drive if possible (given the limited space of a laptop).

Laptop drives are truely awful nowadays.

In our IT dept we get about four dead laptop drives per week. People look horrified when we say "you do perform regular backups dont you?"

The bigger laptop drives seem even worse. Dont expect a drive +40Gb to last much longer than a year (keep receipt). Why do you think IBM sold their disk drive business lock stock and barrel? I'll tell you... because they were shit scared of honouring those 3 year warranties

I have had a few faulty ones as I dabble with laptops once in a while but I didnt have any idea the problem was on this sort of scale. 1 year life Im sure people would rather pay more money and get a decent product. Seems no one bothers about build quality!
