The dreaded fault where the throttle can just cut at anytime.

You will be driving along and then without warning, and then, no response at all, you never know when, it did it on me this morning ½ way across a dual carriageway, the engine does not stop,, I can belt it down the road and go miles and it does not do it.

This fault was on Watchdog years ago. I opened the bonnet this morning and got a shock when I saw the engine had slipped sideways so off to the very nice Volvo forum.(they have very nice mods and one jumped to my aid the last time)
I know that several members here have had one and if they got the same fault. The engine lamp has come on

Is this the throttle body? Seems to be an issue in the Maserati 3200s which are almost identical.

The enigne slipped sideways?

Sounds like the top engine mount has perished. It's a bugger of a job to replace. I did mine a couple of weeks ago. I had to fabricate a bearing press because the dealers use a 50,000lb one(!)

If it is the engine mount, and the engine's moved that far, then your exhaust downpipe will be cracked, and your bottom enigne mounts will also be suspect. All can be replaced with the engine in, but it's not much fun.

Yes it could be its all under a cover, I will post back when I have some more info,, I knew it once off by heart,, but MB seems to have got in the way

This also happened to the S80 belonging to member Fyonn.

Hi Malcolm,

Very sorry to hear what has happened.....the main thing is you wern't hurt in a resulting accident.

The one good thing, at least you had engine power, brakes, steering etc.

When the crank sensor on my C240 at the time decided to go, I was in mid flight. All of a sudden, no PAS, and one shot at the brakes with what was left in the servo !!!!

Luckily I was not say the motorway on the fast lane or else it would have been disastrous.

I never had any trust in that car again.

Hope you get it sorted and it desn't cost you too much

Its the ETM isn't it? Never happened to my S60, but its such a well known issue that they should fix it under goodwill if its out of warranty.

Thank you for the replies,, so it was worth puting it up here :) may I just say that there is nothing wrong with the engine mounts; I have not opened the bonnet in 2 years and I forgot the engine is sideways mounted and it looked odd.

The car is 10 years old now and at 73k miles. I will whip the cover off and have a look now that the SL is clean after the weekend MB world trip.

That's good news. Anything else will be a cinch in comparision ;)

Thank you so much for your input :) it nrealy was a shock when I opened the lid.

The Volvo forum has closed down for 2 weeks, as its got too big and being taken over.

Just imagine this site closing for to weeks,, though maybe Darren would have time to clean his CLK wheels

MALCOLM..... says me in a loud shouting manner  :D

Our stretched limo has done 7500 miles in 5 years but it's serviced every 12 months and I must confess I 'supervise' the numerous under bonnet checks prior to any journey. :)

You forget the engine is mounted sideways :D :D Is that old age? :) :) (said in a joking manner)

Happy motoring
Regards
John

That might be the least of their problems. I wonder if it's in any way connected to their recent libel worries...

Well its never been serviced other than by me and the oil changed ever 6k, and I know the level is OK as the big ends do not rattle on roundabouts at speed, and the brakes work. It has its MOT next Wed., they always tell me how it is.

As for the age bit,,I am booked in to get a face lift, and a re conned inner part,,Once I saw Grav888 I recognised him, and that cant be too bad

When driving the 'firm's' vehicles I always knew when the heater did not work, the water needed topping up in the radiator. If the engine made a funny noise or pretty lights came on , on the dash then I would check the oil (whether it needed doing or not)  My own vehicle sthough are wrapped in cotton wool and if I hear the slightest squeak or rattle then they are iunstantly checked. The car is ALWAYS checked each week and the limo prior to every journey (once or other month or so)

I'm still giggling over the tranverse mounted engine remark. :D :D reminds me of the Candid Camera sketch where some bludger rolled into a garage, filled up with petrol and had someone check the engine because it would not start..... The car had no engine. It wasn't you was it? :D

John

They didn't offer any compensation to Fyonn, he had to just cough up for it, a few hundred pounds it was too. It was just before Watchdog aired, he went back after to see if there was any change in their position. Apparently not.

I still remember that Candid camera bit, and the manager even looked in the boot for it. It really was a shock to see all these manifold pipes along the front and the engine sideways on.

I see its still done free in the USA but no info here yet.

At the first stage the engine has reduced output,(yes I noticed friday) the second time it turns the warning lamp on, but you get full power back again, thats what it said on the USA forum and fits perfectly,,it is the module.

Exeter here we come at some point in time,, and back to eating Cornflakes
