Used his services ages (5 years+) ago on my 300E and before that my 190E. Good service, simple as that.
More recently (2 years ago) I phoned them to see if they could do my cluster coding after I fitted COMAND. No problem they said. Off I went one morning full of hope, only to get there and find they had, nor at that point had ever had, a STAR machine.
Wasted journey and I wasn't impressed. They were also a bit slack returning calls.
I've had much better experience with Star Motors, also in Caversham. Good guys and always busy, which is a good recommendation in itself.
They also lent me a W124 E280 estate which was good for picking up a Christmas tree whilst my CLK was having it's gearbox prodded.

Thats interesting, Star motors are also very god good.

Indeed....had it 3 weeks. Very low mileage with pretty much all the good options - AMG kit, exclusive leather, etc, etc. Tellurite Silver. Studied the forums extensively before purchase - so thanks to you and all others for all the advice!

I have used both John Griffiths and Star. Star will do a local pick up and delivery of the vehicle and the service costs were reasonable. I got peeved with them because they charged me for 45 minutes work on something that I knew only took 10-15 minutes. I didn't mention it but decided to try John Griffiths instead next time I need work doing.
JG replaced ball joints and fitted a non-replaceable air filter last year. The work/price was fine, but after driving my car back to the office I noticed that one of my wheels had been freshly kerbed. I knew it had happened there and that highlights an issue they have with parking. There is virtually no room to park, so they park cars in the street 'round the corner', then fetch them when the customer comes to pick them up.
To their credit, they did not quibble over the damage even though it was about 20 minutes before I rang them to report the matter, and they paid for me to have the wheel refurbished - but I must admit it has put me off them and I'm now going to join the convoy down to Olly at Prestige in Portsmouth for my next service in a couple of weeks.

Apart from the quibble mentioned in my earlier post I would second this. Would probably put them ahead of John Griffiths - certainly they have much more parking space! Interestingly I was told by someone who knows both that Ian who runs Star used to work for JG before starting up on his own.

Gordon at AutoMerc in Newbury is closer. My own experience with him has been very positive, both before the move when he was at Woolhampton and now in the new place in Faraday Road.

I've been phoning around for a price for some work for a friend, and I've been disappointed at the unprofessional responses from all the specialists I've spoken to, until I spoke to Automerc.
I can't comment on the standard of the work as my friend hasn't booked anything yet, but the customer service skills are certainly very competent.
I've used Star in the past for my own car, but this time they were amateurish, and gave me no confidence at all.
