Just Driving... For No Purpose

Never.

Sometimes early on a Sunday morning for about an hour or so when it's nice.

So about once a year then :p

Being serious though, I used to pick on people who opened their convertibles on cold days and blasted the heat out...

I've found myself doing it in the W202! If it's not raining, I turn the heat on full blast and open all the windows... it reminds me of a warmer, more tropical climate (and makes me forget about work/study stress :p)

I don't do it for the adrenaline rush, I do it to relax... if I want adrenaline I have a motorbike... alteratively I could just walk through London after dark...

like others, i used to when i was younger and had my boy racer escorts. Used to drive up and around Dorking and Box Hill etc..

I don't really do it now but I do get a lot of pleasure when i know I have a long trip into the country somewhere - put together an MP3 disc that will last the whole journey, fire up the sat nav, clean out the inside of the car, buy some humbugs and off i go - it's a nice solitary and relaxing thing to do i find, once I get off the M25 of course!

I used to do it alot more during my A-Levels. It used to be a great stress reliever for me.
Nowadays, rather than go for a random drive, I find myself taking the "longer route" home. Late night/early hours driving is when I'll usually do these, longer routes - seeing as there's minimum traffic and less police about for some enthusiast B-road driving

And then there are those lovely sunny Norfolk coast and country roads perfect for a Summer's day, pillarless windows dropped and sunroof open......aaaahhhhh :)

My parents now do it even more than I do, since my Dad bought his toy. Just wish I could have access to it for the odd high day or holiday! Hehe

One more point... I attribute my love of merc's to random drives...

I'm known for having a very strong character... and my parents were at wits-end trying to find ways to put me to sleep... The only way I would "go to bed" would be in my dad's S-class... I would take a shower, brush my teeth and change into my pjs... then I would lie on the back seat as my father drove aimlessly for 15 or 20 minutes, by which time I would be far asleep and would be carried to bed...

Never worked in any other car...

most of my driving is for no purpose except the drive itself .. as I walk to work and live in central London, where you can walk to most other places

I walk to work as well.. and usually my random pointless journeys I'll be out on the motorbike..

So was just nice to grab the car keys and blast through half a tank of fuel..

Ahh, those were the days. After a hard night revising I sometimes went to a particularly good fish & chips shop and eat them in the car. Used to park up where the girls walked between wine bars. A pleasant way to unwind!!

In fact fish & chips are the Dazzler's favourite dinner, and we drive for miles to get good ones. We particularly like driving to Bewdley (Worcs) and sitting beside the River Severn, with a cod and a very weak shandy.

Bewdley is gorgeous, just don't leave your car in the carpark by the river if it looks like floods are imminent ;)

I do and have done since I got a car. Shude may remember when I phoned him up at 8pm on a saturday night many years ago and suggested we visit the angel of the north. 3 hours in either direction :) (I live in Manchester)

of course that was to visit a something I guess, so maybe not quite the same thing, but I've taken all my cars over the snake pass for a nice night time drive.

I would go for nice randon drives more often, but I could really do with finding some good drives near manchester that aren't too far away. something to aim for that's not simple motorway cruising...

any thoughts?

Absolutely, a drive along the coast, over the downs and back over the Kent Weald is a great way to waste a tank of fuel :)

Loads. In Summer I often set my alarm for 5am at weekends and go out for a few hours either in car or on bike. There's no better time.

I used to regularly go for a long ride when i had my Suzuki Hayabusa - now i go for a drive at about 1 or 2am when my son won't settle, it's actually very relaxing (my driving style has slowed down big time since i bought the Merc)
Guess it's just a nice big bus to cruise around in...but turns in to a greedy pig when you press on a bit....

You guys are lucky.....living in London, the enjoymet of driving has been totally removed.

Just to get out of London to get a decent stretch of road, you have to battle with speed humps, cameras, traffic, roadworks. You can get into a traffic jam at any time, night or day due to the ever increasing holes that are being dug in the road.

Driving for fun has been totally killed off here :(

I go for drives regularly, sometimes alone, more often with my wife. There is never a week when we don't go for a drive, just to go for a drive. And we still have to fight for whose turn it is.

Round here we can drive along the coast or through the New Forest, or over Cranbourne Chase (Thomas Hardy country). Every year our holiday is to drive about 3,000 miles around France.

The car matters but driving in pleasant surroundings can be fun in any car. We enjoyed driving the A class to Spain and back. But the 18 months in the S class certainly caused an increase in extra miles driven. Did about 30k miles. Way less than half were necessary. It's a hobby. Still love it despite having done 30-40k miles p.a most of my working life.

Now the E is doing the same to us. Keep inventing reasons to go somewhere. Lovely car to drive. Always feel at home in the E.

I disagree. See my earlier post. If you want to enjoy driving around London you need to get up early. There are some fantastic roads in Essex, Herts, Surrey and Sussex, for example.

Essex, Herts Surrey and Sussex are not London :)
