Key replacement

2014 C63 AMG
So the dealer (non main dealer) I am due to collect my new to me E63 AMG called to say they have lost the Key. Car was taken for prep and the driver has lost it. Turns out it was traded in with only one key so have ordered two from Mercedes, once arrived they will have them coded through the main dealer as they are the only ones who can.

Question or concern I have is that there are two unallocated keys, potentially one within the dealer and the other with the previous owner.

Will Merc give the new keys a new code or just match them to the car meaning there's 4 keys that could unlock the vehicle?

Not too sure here about keys but do consider an additional immobiliser if you can ie Ghost or Pandora. Pandora has a live tracking and geofencing too. Worth considering 👍

The keys come coded from Germany (or used to)

The emergency blade (if still supplied) is usually separate so I would ensure that these have also been ordered.

The dealer can delete the lost keys from the ECU etc.

Blade key can still unlock your drivers door and boot, so in the hands of a crook you may have visitors at night if your car is parked outside?
It will be expensive to replace cylinder locks.
Missing key could end up with an (ehum ehum) honest citizen who thinks your AMG is his AMG?

True but the blade key wouldn't be able to start the car, and, I believe the alarm would sound? 👍

They have stated that the blades will be provided and have been ordered. The delay is that either the keys or blades have to come from Germany. The car is booked in with a main dealer next Thursday so all being well I get the car on the Friday

I believe that when the main dealer codes the new keys to the car they can remove the other 2 keys from the control unit so they will no longer work with the car.
Thanks Chris I'll ask that the originals are removed

My understanding is that you can link upto 8x keys to each car. The car would have come with two keys from new, but you have no way of knowing how many keys are currently linked to the car. The dealer can delete all the old keys and link the 2x replacements to your car, although obviously the mechanical blade locks can still be opened with the missing key blades.

I mean, everyone worries in these sorts of situations, but realistically you could buy a 6-month old £100k used car and the original owner could always have purchased an additional key before selling it on. Most people would be none the wiser if was supplied with the two original keys.

A secondary level of security as already mentioned by badgx would be a wise consideration.

You're probably right, it's more I'm probably over thinking the situation, as you say you'd be non the wiser.

I'll have a look at both options. Has anyone had any dealings with Ghost or Pandora, a preferred choice, costs etc?

My neighbours Range Rover got stolen, which really freaked us out. I personally couldn't sleep that week, thought they could have easily stolen my e63 but was only stopped if it hadn't been blocked in the driveway by my Mrs car. Decided wasn't going to chance it and invested approximate £1500 as i wanted wanted a tracking system with anti hijack. Yes, it's expensive but I feel its worth the peace of mind and is want i needed. Most people install Ghost immobiliser which i think cost around £600 is an immobiliser but if you want tracking and anti hijack then Pandora is a must. I also get impact notifications, intruder alert through my phone.

Thief can't start the car, that's correct, only unlock drivers door and boot then make a quick search in the car take what's worth stealing.
Still a risk if owner leaves valuble stuff in the car.
Wouldn't park at a super market or shopping mall underground garage then someone recognizes plates on car, having the blade key then decide to pay it a visit inside for a steal.
Thief could snatch your kids X-mas presents or other things, then your kids wouldn't be very happy.

Looks like a very clever but if kit. I'll take a look at them

Ghost as mentioned above was £500 fitted but extra for tracker etc
Thanks, any idea if cost for the tracker and how well it stacks up against the Pandora?

You could spend your whole life worrying about fanciful scenarios that will likely never happen

Why are you more at risk of"someone" recognising your car in a Supermarket car park or underground garage and that person having a key?

You've got more chance of winning the lottery than someone identifying your car with a blade to open the door🤣

It's the owners problem if he doesn't change locks, not my or your problem
