just been to shops, went over deep pothole, didnt think anything of it till i got home. went to turn car off wouldnt stop. only way was to take out fuse. now car wont start. put key in ignition all dash lights come on but it wont turn. checked all fuses all ok, disconnected battery, hoping that might clear it. still the same. any ideas please as to what to do next. car is w203 02 reg auto.

just noticed got a slight whirring sound, sounds like very small fan. its coming from area of starter motor, cant get near it to check.

That sounds like the ECU cooling fan.

My guess says the jolt caused the CAN connection to go open circuit so no further commands can be given to the ECU, hence it wouldn't switch off, or now back on.

Given the other ignition controlled items don't work, check the CAN connector there first.

put the battery on chaege overnight and have a go tomorrow to start

funny you should say that, everytime i took the key out of the ignition the fan went into hyperdrive, put key back in it stopped.anyway cut a long story short. looked down suspension strut r/hand side where fuse box sits was full of water (drain hole blocked)hit pothole must have sprayed all over bottom of box. jacked up car front end. whirring stopped, must have cleared water from box, and now (hopefully) everthing seems ok.few faults showing, but cleared on the way to work. bloody mercs, what a pain but i love em

hello again thought everything was ok , but now when i turn car off after about 5 minutes the nearside indicator turns on. no flashing just permanently illuminated. open door and it goes off, then 5 minutes later back on. back to dieselman canbus connection, where should i be looking ?
