Knocking behind Dash when start C180

Hi, when i start my 2003 C180 i've started to hear a knocking noise coming from behind the stereo in the centre console. It only happens 5 or 6 times a few seconds apart, and then stops and i can carry on my journey without any noise.

The best way to describe the noise is similar to when the central locking kicks in and the doors lock when you get moving.

My ESP warning light is on as my tracking is out from a slight shunt and wonder whether the noise is related to that or something to do with the heating system? Going to get tracking sorted on weekend to solve ESP problem, wondering if anyone got any suggestions on the knocking noise when first start car???

Thanks

thanks moonloops - being a total novice when it comes to things like this how much you reckon will cost to rectify?

Previous owner of my car had it sorted @ independent - £400 I think, but don't quote me on that.

I'm sure some better experts than me can clarify on here..

It all depends which one is clicking but its a dash out job normally.

anybody know any decent garages in SW London / Surrey that might be worth taking it to? I live right by the Merc garage on wandsworth bridge but know what they charge!!

Also got to get the prop shaft checked out as starts to resonate at 65-70mph on the motorway (automatic gearbox), then stops past 70mph.. cars only done 39k and know its been properly serviced and looked after as belonged to a member of family, now it all seems to be rattling!

And ask whoever you get to repair it to replace ALL of the motors/gears whilst the dash is out. It's very annoying to have just the one fixed to then find that a different one fails 6 months later. It might seem expensive at first but it will save you money in the long run.

Hi guys.
I have the same clicking now and again.
Am I right in saying that it doesn't affect the temperature of the air, just the direction of flow??
