Hello again.
I just thought I would start a thread about a recent repair on a forum members CLK500. Thanks to Greg for letting me put this up.
The gearbox was leaking from the torque converter seal area and was diagnosed at a dealer. It is quite an unusual place for a leak to occur but not unheard of.
Greg asked me to repair it and so the gearbox was removed and a new seal fitted. A pretty straight forward repair.
I re-fitted the gearbox filled it up with fluid and it still leaked .
I got another seal from a different dealer and removed the gearbox again and fitted the newest seal. The leak was now fixed.......or so I thought.
After 100 miles the leak re-appeared. I was gutted, but I was determined to find the cause so I removed the gearbox (again) and had a closer look at the area around the seal and the front pump. Inside the front pump I found a broken bearing which was not obvious at all. With the new borescope that I have it became very evident what caused the leak.
A new front pump was ordered and the gearbox was split in two and the new pump fitted.
After the final repair and some road testing all is now well. I have just spoken to Greg and so far so good.
