Hello again.

I just thought I would start a thread about a recent repair on a forum members CLK500. Thanks to Greg for letting me put this up.

The gearbox was leaking from the torque converter seal area and was diagnosed at a dealer. It is quite an unusual place for a leak to occur but not unheard of.

Greg asked me to repair it and so the gearbox was removed and a new seal fitted. A pretty straight forward repair.

I re-fitted the gearbox filled it up with fluid and it still leaked:crazy: .

I got another seal from a different dealer and removed the gearbox again and fitted the newest seal. The leak was now fixed.......or so I thought.

After 100 miles the leak re-appeared. :( I was gutted, but I was determined to find the cause so I removed the gearbox (again) and had a closer look at the area around the seal and the front pump. Inside the front pump I found a broken bearing which was not obvious at all. With the new borescope that I have it became very evident what caused the leak.

A new front pump was ordered and the gearbox was split in two and the new pump fitted.

After the final repair and some road testing all is now well. I have just spoken to Greg and so far so good.

See pics below of split geabox.

Ollie, all that work for nothing, it goes to show that one does need to keep a reasonble profit margin to deal with these odd faults.

Credit to you :):)

We managed to get the box out in 25 minutes in the end. With all the tools out on the bench ready.

please move closer to me, i would have so much work for you!! complicated stuff like this is a real problem for me as my technicians (as knowledgable as they are) would spend 4 times as long getting to the issue...

Good info. Can you put an arrow to the area concerned ??

Thanks Bazzle

The front pump is on the bell housing end. You see the bolts? That is it bolted from behind.

Believe me. I do find stuff like this tricky. I had all my concerntration on this one. It HAD to be right.

Makes me ever so keen to change my ATF again. Only one piece of grit can be so costly.

Hi

I have a Mercedes E300 TD 1998, and the gearbox started "pissing out" fluid from the same place

the gearbox works fine but on idle if you accelerate to 3800revs it comes out of the dipstick, if you seal off the dipstick it leaks around the top of the box ???

This started after my friend ( who i brought the car from ) changed the gearbox fluid, after 100miles it started leaking badly

Would it do that if the level wasn't correct ( after 100miles?)

Is it as easy to take the gearbox off my car ? I have a lift and i'm a mechanic

Thanks
Regards

Thomas
