hi there folks, real pain this but every now and then my car went into limp mode when i floored the accelarator but now it just remains in limp mode all the time...

Its coming up an ecu issue, ive replaced the plastic sea which regulates oil passing up the gearbox wiring loom as i thought that was the issue but now im not too sure.

I really really dont want to be buying new ECU units especially at their horrendus cost

hope somone out there can tell me whats going on here.

P.S replaced maf also.

Mine did it once, but the fault on the Star it was the EGR valve or something like that. Apparently they get a bit dirty, but I'm not all that mechanical.

ill give it a try tomorrow/

I hope theyve already tried this.

Do ecu's often need replacing on 320 cdi's?

Very rare these days, is there any oil in the loom, as this can still give problems. though the ECU's will wash out, damaged harnesses do not seem to respond,. I have some on going test with this at the present time. the oil can upset the O2 sensors

update....

the mechanic game me a call to say he was still investigating the problem, but he mentioned that fumes were being deposited in the air filter like the car was breathing back to front so to speak.

The car before i bought it just had replaced a new turbo, intercooler and exhaust system and he may suspect that these items were replace to try and have rectified this underlying issue.

Not good news at all but its all gobledegook to me so im wondering if any u guys can shed any light.

Barrie.

Breather fumes can only go back onto the air filter if the pressure in the intake is high.
This sounds like the EGR valve is suspect but it's worth checking the breathers as well.

The diesel ECU's don't often go faulty but IIRC there was an ECU cooling fan issue so it's worth checking.

The codes won't register a faulty ECU so must be indicating something else.

EGR VALVE jammed don't know if they are vacuum or electrically operated on the S320? I'm surprised it wasn't replaced along with the turbo and intercooler!

Could be a whole host of things. Is the pre cat blocked?

E320CDI Gearboc

My E320CDI est came home in limp mode yesterday and so I limped to my nearest main dealer this am. They took off the gearbox sump and showed me the metal flakes in the oil! Diagnosis : new box reqd at a quoted £3660. Credit crunch or what! Has anyone got better ideas? Grateful for all help. :(

You must be joking and welcome to the forum.

All gearboxes have some metal in them.

Number one I doubt if the box is faulty if it is there are many rebuilders that charge £1350 thats for the whole box re con and 12 months guarantee

update...

there going to try replcaing the EGR valve today, he said the car is runing rich and whats happening is that after gradual use the turbo and exhaust etc are becoming clogged upcausing the car to go into limp mode.

This is the assumption anyway but does it ring any bells?

How much are egr valves?

Should i be looking at other things with these symptoms?

many thanks

Get them to have a look at the inlet port shut off as these can become stiff, blocked etc.

Anyone had this prob before, is there any cost cuttings here? seriously hacked off!!!

Take a 2 lb hammer to the CATS, I'm pleased to see the back of mine.

I wonder why however the recirced exhaust should kill the CAT...?
