Low emission cars C-charge u-turn?

The intelligent powers that be have realised that motorists are buying low emission cars (as encouraged) so they don't pay the congestion charge. NOW TFL are reconsidering...it may cause congestion (nothing to do with lower income of course). Decision to be made in the new year Happy new year!

It makes the point if it needed making, that the CONgestion charge is in fact, a stealth Tax!

And don't the politicians love taxing us? For our own good, of course, not for the money. No, no-no!

Some details need clarifying.

Are the exisiting exemptions for hybrid cars going to continue? What on earth is the justification for them having exemption if the CONgestion Charge is being morphed into an environmental tool (the penalty for Band G vehicles WILL stay)? (Was there ever any justification for their exemption - they cause the same congestion as any other car?). Lexus hybrids are bigger and pollute more than any one of these new Band B cars (120g CO2 or less). Polo diesels now emit less CO2 than the Pious. Sorry, Prius.

TFLs justification has been that the exemption encourages alternative fuels?? So effing what?? If I invent a coal powered car engine, that would be an alternative fuel (might be a problem on the CO2 front), but would that be exempt??

Nearly all the mainstream car manufacturers have come up with cars that would be exempt, now all for nothing. Do these politicans not realise the amount of money that has been wasted doing this. I suppose you could argue that these new cars will reduce CO2 (if that is indeed a good thing?). But we need carrots, not just sticks!!

More fool the people that believed them in the first place... and bought all those Citroens thinking.. no congestion charge - now stuck with a rubbish car (my personal opinion) and paying the charge..

Yup. The Lexus RX400h SUV is 192 g/km CO2, and the LS600h saloon is 219 g/km. These are not 'low emission' cars by any stretch of the imagination, and it's criminal that they are exempt from paying the congestion charge.

it is obvious it was all about money
4x4 are targets now.
soon it will be saloons, then hatchbacks, then anything with wheels. all the more money.
i somehow suspect all these green charities are government funded.
is is not surprising that whenever they blockade a factory/ showroom the police seem powerless to do anything but when clarkson blockaded a bus depot he was threatened.
