Hi Iv just bought some lowering springs for my 1999 C200 W202, I normally lower cars myself but this is my first merc and have read in other threads that you need a special MB tool and MB spring compressors, can't I use normal spring compressors and what is this special tool? Where would I get one from?

Many thanks,
Sy.

I suggest trying to borrow one as even the cheap clone on eBay is 180 quid.

No, this is to compress the front springs as normal spring compressors wont work.

Thanks mate, Iv just had a nosey at another thread that explained it all, looks like I'm gonna have to pay a garage to put the springs in, anyone got a rough idea of how much I should be paying for labour to have all four springs changed?

Many thanks,
Sy.

just to throw my 2pence worth,
i used a normal spring compressor, it is a bit fiddley, but you can do it (just make sure and chain the spring for safety!)
as for special tools, from memory we used an allen key and a good quiality ring spanner to remove the strut bearing.

just have a good look at and dont speed into anything.

cheers

Maybe I'll have a go then, cheers mate,

Play safe and be extra careful if you are not using an MB recommended spring compressor. If the spring jumps out it can cause a serious injury.

Bigsy, where abouts in the UK are you located?

Hi mate, im in Torquay devon, I don't think I'll chance it with standard compressors, I'll to speak to a local merc garage tomorrow and see what they'll charge me.
Iv just watched that vid on how to use the merc compressors, it'd be so easy if I had some of those! Lol

lads when i was 18 i tried this with a ebay job it was a well known brand but i cant remember what make it was well anyway..... the thing buckled and the spring nearly killed us all....if you do have a go. please be careful

My (ex) other half used generic spring compressors lowering one of my 202's. I cannot comment too much on the diffuclty as I went inside and made cups of tea, but it can be done!

I used a generic spring compressor a few times on my SL when juggling with my spring height issue.

The last time I did it, the spring compressor managed to make a break for freedom and whistled past my right ear at great speed and flew 30+ foot across the workshop before ricochetting off the opposing wall.

Had I been 3 inches to the right I would have been very seriously injured. I now own the right tool.

Perhaps if the OP says which area he's in, there might be a member locally with the correct tool & or time with which to help.

I was under the impression that you didn't need a compressor for the rear springs on a W202 ?

Hi im in Torbay Devon. i just spoke to a garage who specialises in mercs and he said "if you wanted a lower car you should of bought a sport and not a classic!" then said he only fits genuin parts that he supplys and lowering my car would cause nothing but problems!

so, im going to ring around a few garages to see if i can get someone to the job, if not ill have to have a go myself.

You can do do the rear without but since you`ll get to do the front, you might do the rears to

Sounds like a very unhelpful person! Sports are lower but you would possibly want it lower than that anyway so still requiring the use of his business or spring compressors!

I lowered my first Mercedes, an Elegance by 40mm, no issues whatsoever, although I did have quite some rear wheel camber! Since then I've had Sport editions and just fitted bigger wheels! :D
