I've just bought another M Class, a thirsty one, so I'm seriously considering converting to LPG. Has anyone done this with an M Class? Views, advice, do's, don'ts much appreciated.

Thanks folks.

yes I did.... on a 320. Always had rough startup in the cold and only 120-130 miles range with doughnut tank.

Saying that would I LPG again... hmmmm perhaps if I had purchased a nice ML500 from the classifieds then yes.

Good luck,

I've nothing specific to add to LPG in the M-class, but a mate who has a Jag XJR with LPG also finds it runs rough on cold starts and recommends starting on petrol, then once warmed after 5-10min switch to LPG. He also generally finds he gets 10% less efficiency and the tank size gives another 10% less range than a petrol equivalent. (something to do with not being able to run a LPG 100% empty)
HTH.

Our system was set to run on petrol untill then engine warmed then it would switch, but it was still rough. The tank was underslung, so that may have made a difference.

I think its because you can only fill the tank to 80% full. If you convert maybe an electrical engine preheater ( kenlowe or erberspacher) would help? LPG should remain liquid till it reaches the vapouriser where engine coolant heat normally helps to volatilise the fuel? More cost of course.

I run a 320 on LPG.... Can recommend an excellent chap in Cannock for your needs...you be hard pusehed to find better

I got a 60ltr tank and get 210 miles driving up and down the A1 with it

It is very very good and I wouldnt think twice about doing it again

Very very smooth and no different from running petrol with the exception on oli changes the oil isnt dirty

Regards

Pete

If you ever cross the channel remember the Eurotunnel is out if you have an LPG tank.

Thanks for all your comments folks, helpful. Pete, is that an M class 320 you LPG'd. If so, could you let me know they name of the guy in Cannock. Thanks.

I also prefer the ferry as it give be time to get out and walk round / have a kip before the next leg of the journey.

Also and I don't know this are caravans allowed on the tunnel?

I vowed when it was first mooted I would never use it and never have, I like boats!

Yes, caravans are allowed.

It all depends what you are doing. We drive to my wife's parents in the South of Germany, and we just want to get there as quickly and easily as possible. So a 35 minute crossing is a no-brainer really. You still get a break from driving ... chance to use the loo (esp. for the kids), and have a drink and a bite to eat.

Fair enough but we arer 4 hours on a good day from the Ferry / tunnel by which time I'm ready to stop for lunch / stretch.

Still managed Annecy to Chester in a day using the Ferry (twice now) its a long day but comfy in the Merc :)

Its ages since I've been on the Tunnel, collected some cars and drove them back.

As you say depend what your doing for a long weekend to Euro Disney I would use the tunnel.
