M112 C320 V6 engine oil 10w40

With 50k on the clock it will do more good than bad
No road trips over siberia lol just in NE England so doubt it will get below - 15 even on the coldest of mornings.. However again I'm getting mixed opinions. Some seem to be saying a 10w grade oil is too thick for a car with such low milage, that 0w or 5w would be better as its less thick..

50k might be low miles but a lot of ware if its been ragged around all its life. Are you the only owner ? as not all drivers drive like you.

Evidence please - or at least an explanation.

Protection from what?

Marginal and really not a problem unless London regularly experiences minus 35C.

So what will it be? How long do you imagine it takes oil being vigorously pumped around components being subjected to combustion heat to gain 5 degrees C?

Show what?

Pick a 5W40 and 10W40 suitable for use in a MB .

I'm the second owner. It was previously owned from new by a very rich elderly lady who spent an absolute fortune maintaining the vehicle, so I highly doubt she thrashed or ragged the car at all 😂

I used to put a litre of 80s gear oil in my old Granada with the essex v6, over 200k and drove to scrap yard with bad bodywork. Your in a C class so the body will fall off before the engine packs up. 😇

Goodness 😂 well my little v6 coupe has been garaged her whole life so there's not even a spec of rust on it yet..

Joking aside, my 112 has 145k on it and still runs like a dream, what oil Previous owners used is any bodies guess, one oil change isn't going to make that much difference.

It isn't too thick just slightly thicker when cold. Offset that with letting it idle for a moment or two before pulling away from cold start and be gentle during the warm-up phase (which you should be regardless of oil used) and there's not a problem.

There are good reasons to use the 10W over the 5W and they relate to when the engine us up to temperature (most of its running). See article below for more info. In short, a 5W achieves its 40 upper temp rating by using vulnerable polymers as VIs (viscosity improvers). The 10W oil starts with a thicker base oil and is less dependent on those VIs.

I feel the same as @Bellow has said.
Marginal difference when cold, we generally don’t have really bitter winters here, and fewer additives to protect over the smaller range.
Imho 10w40 will be fine 👍🏻👍🏻

Edit: oh, you might just get slightly worse fuel consumption when cold, but I don’t think it will be noticeable.

That's fine if that's the case, I mean as long as its not going to damage my engine and it will keep it running at optimal condition I don't really care what oil it is to be honest

It's just very difficult to know what to believe, when everyone seems to disagree or have different opinions. Especailly seeing as I don't know a great deal about this engine other than its said to be very reliable, as I've only just got the car.

As discussed, the viscosity you have isn't a problem. Beyond that what you have to be sure is that it meets the MB xxx.xx numbered spec for your engine as that prevents harm to the catalytic convertor.

The internet is a tricky place. Sort the wheat from the chaff by questioning what's written and see if there's plausible answers. Those who duck the questions can be disregarded.

IMPORTANT UPDATE** this is the oil they claim to have put in the car. "THE PRODUCT OUR SUPPIER HAS SUPPLIED US WITH IS CALLED NAPA 10W40 SEMI SYNTHETIC PREMIUM OIL (TT211S5L)"
Can someone please tell me if this meets the Mercedes numbered spec.

Unfortunately a completely unremarkable
MB 229.1 spec .

Surely the only thing matters is, if they have put a non recomended spec in, they should rectify at their cost?

The issue is I'm living no where near the garage atm so it would be more than what it's worth to go all the way back 🙄
